Paris- Where wouldn't you stay??
I've bid for a room through priceline and ended up at the Libertel Le Moulin which is across the street from the Moulin Rouge. I've heard this isn't a great area, but haven't experienced it myself. Any suggestions or advice about the hotel or the area??

Thanks!

Find another area, fast.
|
I would NOT stay there.
|
Do you have a pistol permit? Seriously, there are so many great areas to stay in Paris. Do a search and get something else.
|
Thanks for your replies. What constitutes it as being a bad area? High crime, dirty, red light district near or am I in it??

I would love to cancel my reservation, but since it it was done on priceline, no cancellations or refunds are allowed.
|
Then Mike what was the point of asking if it is a done deal?
|
Well have a nice trip, Mike.

I don't know what you are looking for in a room, but I just returned yesterday from 4 days in Paris and will tell you a little about my room and location.

This was my first visit to Paris and after much time spent looking around on this site and many others, I decided the 5th Arr. (Latin) on the left bank was probably the area I wanted to stay. Next came the task of finding a cheap room, I ended up at the Hotel des Arenes on Rue Monge. I got a twin room for 72.00 Euro's a night and while I wouldn't say it was large, it certainly had 2 twin beds and a bathroom with a tub/shower. The room was number 65 on the top floor with an opening window and a 3X3 standing area to look up and down the street. The hotel was near enough to everything that on the first day we actually walked to Notre Dame, The Pantheon, Luxembourg Gardens, The Eiffel Tower and then back up the Seine River to the hotel. Also, the Frisco Bar at about 50 Rue Monge was right across from the hotel and we ended a few nights talking with the locals that frequent there, the place was wonderful!!

Hi Mike. Well, in addition to a low price, that's the other kind of "price" one may pay with Priceline.

I've only been in that area, never stayed there, but I don't think it's THAT bad that it would require you to make a new reservation somewhere else and lose the money you've spent on your Priceline reservation.

I think our expectations make a big difference in how we end up feeling about a place, so how about if you go with the absolute *worst* expectations of your area, and then I bet you'll end up being surprised that it doesn't meet your extreme negative expectations.
|
I stayed not too far from there with a tour group last year and really it was not THAT BAD! There were some sex shop type places, but there was also a kids carnival going on in the street so.... We did not spend a lot of time in the area, but we had no problems coming or going to the hotel via the Metro.

Curious,

I was wanting to know what kind of area that I had gotten myself into as to why I originally posted this.

Thanks Capo and Carol for the info. On a positive note about this location, I'm sure there won't be a dull moment in this area!!
|
It really is not all that bad of an area and Libertel is considered to be one of the nicer chains.

If you cross the street and go past the Moulin Rouge and the Quick (fast food), take a right hand turn at the corner, head uphill, and you'll be on rue Lepic, which is a market street and has some decent places to eat. Rue Lepic then leads to rue des Abbesses, which has a number of fun cafes.

Just keep your wits about you--and that's good advice for wherever you find yourself, not just Montmartre.

To the top for Mike!

Many travellers stay around Times Square in NYC, you think Moulin Rouge is less safe than that? Paris is one of safest cities in the world, Red Light action is not always unsafe, just a little seedy...It's good for the soul.
|
I once stayed in the "red light" district that you are going to be staying in Mike with a male friend. They asked us if we wanted one twin or two twin beds and we said definitely two! The beds were disgusting and there were all kinds of people having loud "fun". In the end we couldn't take it and spent the evening and morning at a bar until we could check out and into another area. Good luck.
|
Mike I think you and Ooops should get together. Look up her post from yesterday.
|
Joe,

I think you're right about meeting up with Oops! Though Elle kind of put me at east about the Libertel chain in general. As long as the rooms are clean and the security around the hotel is ok, hopefully, there won't be any problems.

To the top!
