Paris ---Where to stay in 1st arr
 

Any nice choice of hotels in the 1st arr in Paris? Is this a good area for a first timer as far as convenience? We will spend up to 400 EUR

The 1st is very convenient. Our favorite hotel in the area is the Mansart, just off the Place Vendôme and sharing a wall with the Ritz. It's quite a nice hotel, within walking distance of the Louvre; there are any number of good restaurants in the area.

The Mansart room is especially spacious and has a fine view over the Place Vendôme.

The first is fine. Anywhere from the 1st to 8th is very convenient.

Frankly, as a first timer I would not recommend the 1st. We stayed at the Westin last winter and felt the area was not safe at night. Also, many of the hotels we previewed in the area were inferior to less expensive hotels in the 7th and 6th. We ended up staying at the Hotel St. Vincent in St. Germaine for 240E.

I would never characterize the 1st as unsafe. That said, as I said on another thread of yours, I don't like staying there myself because it's basically "downtown," and I like a somewhat quieter and less expensive part of town.

Have none of the many suggestions you've received on that other thread, which has 70 responses now, panned out? Is it possible you are overthinking this?

We like the old architecture, with the new modern interiors that many of the properties have... any recommendations on these in Paris?

it can be in st germain or latin also...

Safety is not a concern in the first, or where I happen to stay, next door the 2nd.

The St. Vincent looks great on-line... how would you rate it?

The Brighton Hotel is in your budget, I think. I've never stayed there but it gets good reviews, especially from those that have a Tuileries view room. Some rooms also have balconies.

Very convenient location, near the Louvre, d'Orsay, and across from the Tuileries. It's an easy and lovely walk across the Seine to the 6th.

We stayed in an apartment in the 1st last year and I was surprised how much more residential it was than I thought it would be after reading comments here.

I have stayed at the Brighton, and yes, we had the View room and it was lovely. It is not a deluxe hotel, it is a very nice hotel with DELUXE views.
I have stayed in 1st 4th, 5th , 6th, 8th and recently tried 14th.

Of all of the areas, I prefer the 6th, and found the 1st the most dead at night.And not particularily conveinent for transport, there are places in the 5th and 6th where you can catch more metro lines easier, and get the RER .

That said, I would NEVER say the 1st was unsafe( Annebeey why did you think it was??) , I have stayed there alone with my child and felt safe even in the evenings!

There are serveral very luxe and expensive hotels in the first, so the Brighton is a good choice with out the luxe prices( runs about 250 a night whereas others on same street start at400- 500+ per night)

Hotel Saint Vincent is very new, so very few people have had a chance to stay there. I saw news of its opening this past spring, I believe. People who have stayed at d'Aubusson are much more numerous.

I spent a year in Paris while in school (yes yes yes a lifetime ago) and stayed at the Brighton in 2007. I think it's the best location in Paris -- just lovely.
