At the Montparnasse 1900 I had a good steak including oysters and wine for €33. Moules at Leon de Bruxelles cost under €20. Dinner at Roger de Grenouille was €20 but I overdid it with wine and the cheese board. Lunch at the BHV is a bargain.

Les ministeris on rue de Bac has a nice 3 course plus winfefor 30 Euro and the food is good. Vagenade has a daily special menu that runs under that. I never have trouble staying under 30 Euro a person not including wine but I hardly ever eat 3 courses.

I suspect that the apparent decline in quality of casual French restaurants may be as much about perception as anything else. The quality of cooking available in the UK and many parts of the US has improved dramatically over the past 10-20 years. Perhaps it isn't so much that France has slipped, but more that we now expect better food when dining out? I don't think that explains all of the apparent decline, but I think it explains a fair amount of it.

As noted in some other threads, I have a list called "A Selection of 80 Inexpensive and Good Parisian Restaurants (French Cuisine Only)" published by Paris Eiffel Tower News around 2006 (so may not be completely up to date). We have liked the handful on the list we have tried so far. I don't see it anymore on their Web site, so if you want the pdf file (22 pages, by arrondissement) email me at [email protected]

Last time we were in Paris (May) Equinox in the Marais (R. des Roseiers) had a 3-course (entree-plat-dessert) menu for €15. Food is sometimes very good, sometimes just OK - - depends on what the choices are that day and what you like/don't like. Glass of house wine ~€4. Pretty decent meal for €19.

Semi Mike thanks for sending me your file. We have been to several listed.I was pleased to see Jacque Melac listed. Have you ever been to his Annual Vendage in mid September? I have several friends that go every year and have a great time, it's like a big street party with rustic foods and lots of wine, then you climb the ladders to pick the grapes!!Lots of music too!

Also, the alexanderlobrano blog has an index by arrondissement which is very helpful if you want to look for something in a specific neighborhood.
I also agree that some of the best meals these days for me in Paris are ethnic restaurants;thai, cous cous, greek etc. We tend to save eating at "French" restaurants for when we go out to the country where food can be great and still a reasonable price.
Although I agree there is inflation and prices go up-to me the difference is that it used to be easy to find good quality price places without trying hard in Paris, and now more and more I need to do research in Paris to find places like that. There was just something on the French news yesterday about how so many bistros in Paris are buying frozen pre-cooked stuff and serving it as "homemade"-a big scandal here in France as you can imagine. And at least most of the time I hope I can still tell the difference!
