I thought it might help to update this thread, as it has recently been topped. Ms. Bear and I recently returned from a month-of-May visit to Paris.

The Navigo Decouverte is a most convenient way to use the Metro/bus system if the weekly or monthly time period fits your visit. Visitors should have no trouble buying one, as it is intended for non-residents. The transaction can be done at the CDG RER ticket office at the same time one puchases an RER ticket to central Paris (we used the RER both ways, with one suitcase to check on the plane, one carry-on suitcase, and two carry-on items with no trouble). The purchase can also occur at any Metro station and perhaps elsewhere as well.

The plastic "card" costs 5 euros and requires a small headshot photo. The payment can be for a week (Monday to Sunday) or a calendar month, and that same plastic card can be "refilled" as needed, including on future visits in the coming years.

In the most heavily touristed areas, there is often a long line of Japanese schoolgirls or German seniors or etc. waiting to go through the few "paper ticket" turnstiles, while the Navigo ones are less crowded and take little time per person. You do not need to store paper tickets or look for them in your wallet (a big advantage if you want to keep your wallet, etc. out of sight) or pocket.

The one-week pass costs about the same as 1.5 carnet (= 15 trips)not counting the "reusable" plastic card for 5 euros.

d_claude_bear - thank you for your info.

has the navigo decouverte replaced the carte orange?

it sounds like the navigo decouverte costs under 20 euros. is that correct?

The Navigo Decouverte costs 5€ - plus whatever pass you load to it.

travelnet - thanks for the reply.

i was unclear in my post ...

what i really meant was navigo decouverte + one week's pass = 20 euros (or so)...

i've done some searching and this appears to be the case.

thanks!

lilaki--

The cost of a one-week pass for zones 1-2 (basically everywhere the metro goes) is 16.3 euros and will go up a little when the annual increase goes in effect 1 July. That is in addition to the one-time charge of 5 euros for the Navigo Decouvrerte itself. For one calendar month, the zones 1-2 pass is currently 53.5 euros.

lilaki, true, but a different example would be if my trip were Monday-Sunday, and I was flying in and out of CDG, then I'd get the ND + weekly CO but I'd get zones 1-5 which cost more like 31€ (so then the Navigo would cost me 36&euro.

Bonsoir from Paris!

DH and I arrived Friday morning 6/26. We bought single RER tickets from CDG to get to the hotel, then bought a handful of single tickets for use over the weekend. (In retrospect, should have bought the carnet, but just weren't sure we would use them.)

What we did buy was the CARTE ORANGE. We bought them at 10:30pm on Friday night (for use beginning on Monday) at the Bir-Hakeim metro station near the Eiffel Tower. They were still available there and cost us EUR16~ for the Monday-Sunday week, June 30-July 6. We did not bring photos with us, so took them in the photo booth at a metro station near our hotel for EUR4.

Since we are here for 11 days spanning two calendar months, this made the most sense to us. We will likely buy single tickets to/from Versailles one day and then return RER tickets to CDG.

I probably would've spent the extra 2€ for the 1-5 zone carte orange for convenience, but that is just me.
