Round trip is 6.90€ out of Saint Lazare station, near the Opera.

6.9€ is the roundtrip fare on the Paris-Saint-Lazare network -- the line ends at Versailles-Rive Droite.

A roundtrip fom Opéra (or any Parisian station) to Versailles Rive Gauche-Château de Versailles on the RER C line -the closest station to the castle - is 5.40€.

Oh, do people still visit the château? ;) I thought it might be for a shopping trip.

Oh, do people still visit the château? ;)

So it seems !

But shopping in Versailles... now, come on ! :)

Will taking the RER C line or Saint Lazare the same time wise? Though taking the RER C line will be closer to the chateu from what I understand.

The difference is less than 5 minutes. Both the Saint Lazare route or the RER C route are easily walkable. The route that you want to avoid is the one from Montparnasse to the 3rd Versailles station -- but even that can be cansidered walkable, as I have done it before.

RER C service is also i think much more frequent though there may be two trains an hour or so from St Lazare. C is also more conveninent for many as it runs along the Seine thru Paris. But either is a short walk from the shopping area. Actually the Lazare service is a bit closer to the shops.
And if you want to twin Versailles with Chartres, as Chartres is on the same Montparnasse-Versailles (Chantiers)-Chartres route, take RER C or other train to Versailles then walk the about one mile from shopping area (by chateau) to Chantiers station, the mainline station for trains to Chartres and return to Paris to Montparnasse from Chartres (about 40 mins past Versailles).
