We too have just returned from France and the highlight of our trip was the Fat Tire Bike Tour of Versailles so if you have a full day free I highly recommend this tour to have a wonderful experience of the whole Versailles property. It included time inside the Chateau where it is very crowded but spent some relaxing hours out in the gardens and canal area.

Has anyone been there the last week of December / first week of January? I'll be in Paris then and want to know if it's business as usual (re: the tourist) or if they do anything special during the holiday season.

Jandee,
I am a new Fodorite and have many thank yous for the many threads I read before going to Paris. Just wanted to comment on your observations at Versailles. Having just returned (Saturday) from Paris and a side trip to Versailles, I have to agree with you about the Jeff Koons exhibit. I was so very disappointed to see how his works clashed with the beautiful surroundings of the palace. Perhaps that was his plan as he was allowed to choose in which room each piece was to be displayed. To stand in the Hall of Mirrors and not be able to see the end of the room where kings and queens received subjects, only to look at a huge, blue mylar-like balloon was awful. Not to mention the china likeness of a white Michael Jackson with a monkey in another room. I tried to look past the Koons weirdness and imagine the glory and history of Versailles. I hope to share some of our trip when I get past jet lag. Again, many thanks to all for sharing their experiences. I love reading all of your comments, tips and experiences. |
Sounds like I'm the only person here who liked the Jeff Koons exhibit at Versailles. I think it's hilarious.

I love to experience the fountains in late spring. I'm trying to decide if it's worth going on a weekend for them in the middle of March. My son and I did the little tram tour of the entire estate last summer and really enjoyed that. With tram transport, I finally did the hameau and the Trianon.
I've never bought the foraits loisirs combo but I will now check into that thanks to the info on that posted in this thread. Thanks! |
crepes_a_go_go - The Versailles fountains are only on during summer. It usually goes from April to Sept. Mid-March is gonna be too early for it.

Thanks yk - I had not yet checked the calendar. It's really still too cold in March.

Nope, that's incorrect. I was in Versailles last October 18th (Saturday), and the fountain was on. |
To me the best way is to buy a Forfait Loisirs Chateau de Versailles pass that offers, the rail ticket, the admission etc. Check the web site.
