Observations<BR><BR>What to wear: Let me weigh in with one more opinion. Dress in any way that makes you feel comfortable. My opinion may be colored by staying in the 5th, but most people were quite casually dressed. Black leather seems to be favored by the French, but they are all (well almost all) skinny as can be.<BR><BR>Footwear: If you are going to be walking or taking the metro wear something comfortable. I was wearing Ecco’s which I love and find very comfortable, but by our seventh day there my ankle was shot (there goes that age related arthritis!).<BR><BR>Eating places: While I love food and wine, I just couldn’t get myself to go to one of the 3/4 star restaurants. I recommend that you wander some of the side streets, look at the menus and look for locals. We did try one of Rick Steves recommendations and were not that impressed.<BR><BR>Hotels: We stayed at the Hotel Residence Monge on rue Monge in the 5th. The rooms were clean, the beds OK but it would be an understatement to say the rooms are small. For most of our stay this wasn’t a problem as we were only there to sleep but toward the end of the stay I began to long for someplace to sit down and read.<BR><BR>Link: http://home.infi.net/~jamest/index.html<BR>

Hi Jim thanks for the info. When I was in Paris in 97 I stayed at the Hotel des Arenes also on rue Monge. I liked the location as it was central for me.<BR>

Hey Jim I saw your pictures and I have a question. What is the Deportation Museum? I am going back to France in November and always like to see new things that I have not seen. Thanks again.<BR>Andrea<BR>

Andrea, the Deportation museum is to commemorate those who were deported and killed during WWII. It's more of a monument than a museum. I saw it mentioned in some books and think it is well worth a visit.<BR><BR>The Hotel Monge is almost next door to where you stayed. I did like the area because it was so easy to get to things also. Metro stop practically next door. We cut thru to the rue Mouffetard by way of the rue Rollin across the street go up some steps and go down a limited access street that looks like an alley and you are right at the Mouffetard.

near Notre Dame

The Deportation Museum is located directly across the street from the back of Notre Dame. And, it is well worth your time. It only takes a few minutes to view....but the haunting memory will last a long time.

Andrea, cross the street in front of Notre Dame, going toward the Seine - there will probably be a lot of tourist buses parked ther. You will see a small park - if its sunny and warm it will be packed with Parisiens taking in the sun. At the end of this small park you will see a low wall with a wrought iron gate. You acually will go down to the site. I agree with the others - one of the more memorable sites of Paris - along wth the military museum.
