Paris transit passes

Will a Paris transit pass(es) be worth it for a family of five for a week? I can't find the details on them. Thanks.

If you intend to see a lot of the city, yes. If you intend to ride many times, buy a Paris Visite-fixed price, unlimited rides for number of days selected. If you envisage fewer trips, buy carnets-books of 10 metro tickets.
In any event, they are readily available in the larger metro stations, and on the internet, the latter including a service charge.

Taxis would be very expensive for 5 people, and can be difficult to obtain at times.

Don't even think about renting a car to drive inside the city. Parking is difficult to find, and the driving maniacal.

absolutely! consider the "paris visite"
pass, which includes bus, metro(subway), local train, and most museums. you can purchase a pass for various time durations and zones (zones 1-3 should be adequate, unless
you want to do disney). for specifics, check out the "ratp" website. bonjour!
I would buy either tickets (buy a "carnet" of 10 instead of individual tickets, it's much cheaper) or, if you arrive at the beginning of the week a "carte orange" weekly pass.

The "paris visite" pass isn't worth it, IMO. It's about the same price for 1 day than 10 tickets, and the same price for 2 days than a weekly "carte orange". And the freebies which come with this pass are for places you probably won't go to.

Don't mistake the "paris visite" pass with the "paris-musees" pass, which is well worth it, especially if you intend to visit a lot of museums.

For specifics, try :

http://www.ratp.com/index_eng.htm

The link I gave isn't valid anymore. the correct one is :

http://www.ratp.fr/Eng/index.htm

Also I noticed there's nothing about the "carte orange" in the english language part of the site. FYI, it costs 85 FF for zones 1-2 (covering all of Paris itself), more if you add more zones. Also you need a picture.

As far as I remember, buying a carte orange covering CDG airport (don't remember the number of zones) is worth it and includes disney.

Paris-visite, carte orange and tickets are all valid in both the subway and buses. (also RER as long as you stay within the zones covered by your pass).

Hmmm...Thinking twice about it, perhaps the paris visite is slightly more convenient than the carte orange since you don't have to bring a photo, have all the infos in english on the ratp site, and since when crossing the atlantic, the price difference isn't really something one should worry about.

I Still don't think it's a better deal tthan buying tickets (you most probably won't use 10 tickets/day) but once again the price difference is quite ridiculous as compared to the cost of a transatlantic trip.

Also, subway/buses are free for childrens under 4 and half price for childrens under 11 (not absolutely sure about the exact ages)

Unless you're doing a lot of traveling out of the city, the Paris Visite becomes a very expensive propostion. Better is the Carte Oriange but it depends on which days you'll be there. The Carte Orange runs from Monday through Sunday so if you arrive Wednesday it will only be good for 5 days in which case you'll have to figure how much you'll be using it. After Wed it's no longer sold for that week although you can buy it to start the following Monday. You will need a head shot - about 1' square or less. Take a Polaroid and cut out your face or use a photo machine.Otherwise just buy carnet as needed which are packs of 10 tickets sold at a discount from the metro cashier. For more Paris information e-mail me.

Aside from the info on the RATP site link which Claire gave, you can view specific pass info on www.parisvisite.tm.fr

You can also mix'n'match: a five-day Paris Visite and a couple of carnets for day six, as an example. Buy only the zones 1-3 pass; if you go to Versailles, buy a separate ticket.

Clair and/or Christina: I've never done this, so can it be done? Use the zone 1-3 pass, then a ticket from 3-4 to get to Versailles? If it's not compose, you can't get out at Versailles...
