Paris: transforming industrial architecture
 

For those of you who have been to Paris many times and have seen all of the traditional sights and even the interesting ethnic neighborhoods like Belleville or the Chinatown at Olympiades, you have probably not seen two interesting former industrial zones.

Industrial zones? Why would anybody want to see those? Well, one in the 13th arrondissement has become a university campus and another one in the 19th is now a very prestigious corporate address.

thanks for those photos which i will digest in more detail later - industrial architecture always intrigues me - new adaptations and especially so in Paris

Too bad they tore nearly all those Les Halles wrought iron market sheds down before this trend started.

You can still see some Baltard buildings at Porte de Pantin (la Grande Halle de la Villette) and in the Parc Georges Brassens.

I'm glad you posted these photos. I know my husband who is into commercial development, will love to see these buildings when we are in Paris.
He is currently building a 28 storey office tower and he is always checking out buldings where ever we go. When we were in New York last September we were checking out elevators and lobbies. We have been to the Distillery District in Toronto that was mentioned in your photo thread. Another re-done area is Yaletown in Vancouver. Thanks for this!

Thanks for that link. Nice to see how the new and th eold are blended. Also happy to see you've got pics there from my home town's success story (Distillery). Unfortunately I think we lack some of the vision they have in Europe.

decee, if your husband has not seen them already, he would probably find Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, and the docklands area in Amsterdam, interesting.

WillTravel, I'll pass this onto him. This up coming trip we had originally planned on going to Amsterdam as well as Paris but we decided that it deserves it's own trip-we are also going to Prague and the Champagne area this trip.
