Paris to What city in Italy?

We will be leaving Paris by rail for Italy in mid October. We hope to include Venice, Rome, Florence, Tuscany, and Cinque de Terre on our trip. What would be the most sensible itinerary? Also, what is the name of the train station in Cinque de Terre?

Take the overnight train to Venice, then a short 2-3 hour train ride to Florence. Rent a car for Tuscany and return to Florence. Use train for Cinque Terra and Rome. Except for Cinque Terra, I've done this a few times and it works well. The itinerary is rather crowded, however, for the normal trip length of 2-3 weeks.

Martin, It depends where you depart Italy. I would prefer Paris, Nice, Genoa, Monterosso al mare[CT],Florence,
Venice, Rome as your sequence. You can also do it via Milan to Venice but that
will make the CT hard to access.
I hope you have you have at least 12 days for that itinerary---15 is better.

I agree with Bob the Nav -- have done the Paris to Nice to Florence bit and it was lovely; have also done Rome to Venice on a separate trip and that was great too. However, I absolutely would not do the Italy portion of this trip in less than 14 days, and more (17) would be better in my opinion.

My son and I are doing a similar
itinerary in the latter part of
November. After Paris through
Switzerland possibly to Venice,
Florence and Rome for a couple
days. I would be interested in
how your trip goes. I still need
a hotel for Rome, any suggestions?

Thanks for the replies. These forums have been terrific!

We'll have about 15-17 days to do the Italy part of the trip. We will try to take the Paris - Nice, Genoa, Monterosso al mare[CT], etc. sequence. My next question(s) is how to minimize cost. We plan to buy an Italian Kilometer rail pass for the Italy travel. Is the Paris - Nice rail trip worth doing by day for sightseeing (looking out the window) or should we go overnight to save a day for touring and also save a night's cost for a hotel?

Martin,

Check into the cost of flying from Paris to Venice or Florance. The train for that distance is usually expensive especially if you get a sleeper. They have been running specials on one way tickets.
Too much. Save Rome for next time. There's plenty to do in Northern Italy.
