Paris to Rome in 2 weeks, any ideas for side trips?
My mother and I will be staying in Paris (after my semester abroad there) for a few days starting May 29th before travelling somewhere else. We are going to fly out of Rome on June 14th. We are considering taking an overnight train to Munich, then catching a train to Vienna and stay there for a few days before taking an overnight train to Rome.
Do you have any ideas for what we should do? All that is settled is the arrival (Paris) and departure (Rome) dates and locations.

Munich and Vienna are major cities with lots of things to see. Get some guidebooks (I usually start with Fodor's and the Michelin Green Guide) and start getting some ideas of what might interest you by reading them.

A week in Paris and a week in Rome isn't a bad idea (especially if your two weeks include arrival and departure dates) when you consider there are loads of day trips you can make from either place. Every time you move you lose anywhere from a half a day to a full day of sightseeing time, depending on when you check out of one hotel and when you arrive to check into the next.
Just to give an example you can look at this thread and see my list of Paris day trips (reply #6):
