Paris to Provins?
 

From a message someone posted a while ago, I found this statement: "Also, we took the RER to an end point at Provins (less than 1 hour)." However, when I use the RATP web site, the only routing I find is from Gare de l'Est via SNCF. Does the RER really go to Provins?

I think that was me, and I apologize b/c it was not the RER, but an SNCF train as you say.

I'm pretty sure all my other information is good, though.

We went to Provins in May '06 - used an 8-zone Carte Orange (Provins is the last stop on the pass for that route) since we could also use it for the airport trip.

I would say that Provins falls under your characterization of "quaint", although it was very scenic and enjoyable. We attended one of the falconry shows, just us and a large group of school children out on a field trip. We walked from the train station into town and up the hilly street to the tourist office. Took the little white train around once, but walked again after that. Just meandered, snacked, took pix, snooped down little streets, had a nice day out. There are some museums but we didn't go inside anything other than the Tour Cesar (wonderful lookout tower).

I've visited Provins - enjoyable town. There is a day pass that gives you access to some of the sites. I particularly found the Tour César, Saint Quiriace Collegiate Church, the fortified walls and Les souterrains interesting. The pass I purchased gave me entrance to one "show" of which there are a few. This is a plesant enough side if you have kids, but of course - the shows are in English.

You can get there by public transportation:

By Rail : (you can travel to Provins with an 8 zone travel pass 8) :

- Direct from the Gare de l'Est train terminus in Paris. For train times phone 01 64 00 01 95. (This is the method I used).

- in bus (from RER Chessy Marne la Vallée - Provins) : Seine et Marne Express : 01 60 67 30 67.

Ah, we enjoyed Provins quite a bit when we were there. It doesn't have the "wow" factor of some of the more popular day trips, but the ramparts were great and the town was lovely and quaint.

I create an 'album', click 'upload photos', a window opens with a blank box and I 'drag' photos from my Windows file into the box. Then click to start the loading process. The album will open when all are loaded so you can rearrange, title, edit, etc.

Thank you travelnut...I did that. I should have told you I want to be able to put those uploaded pics for the album, to the Fodor's thread i may be posting. Sorry for the confusion. Cheers.

oh, you mean you want to post the URL so we can click on it and go to your album..? sorry!

the way I do it is "share this album" and put my own email address and make sure NOT to check the 'make friends sign in' to view the photos. Then I go to my email and get the link that was sent to me by Kodak. Then I copy/paste that link into a post here on Fodors. Sometimes the link is very very long, in which case, I paste it first at www.tinyurl.com and that site will provide an abbreviated link that actually points to the original one sent by Kodak.

Provins really looks peaceful, I like the idea of just wandering around the grounds and ramparts, it looks so peaceful.

Bozama...I love looking at other ppl's photo's as well. I don't think it's strange..that's what is so good about the Fodor's forum. It's fun to cybershare! Glad you enyoyed them!

We went there in May 2006. More notes:
- the train station is at one end of town and the Tourist Information is at the other end of town (uphill).
- we walked that just fine, taking maybe a slow 1/2 hour to do it.
- at the TI there is one of the little trains to take you around to the ramparts, some museum stops etc.; makes a loop going one direction. We took it going out from the TI, got off somewhere then didn't get back on again, b/c it was fun walking.
- we went into an alimentaire for some snacks, a beer and a 'demi' bottle of wine. I didn't have a corkscrew but the clerk and I did enough charades for him to happily uncork it for me, and threw in a couple of plastic cups as a nice gesture.

I got most of my planning information from these sites, but I also sent off for mailed brochures, map etc and they sent a nice package of info to me. I think I just sent an email to the TI address to get those.
