I agree with Avignon as the train destination for convenience.

GregY2 - Thanks so much for your advice. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner regarding your desire to know which place I was looking at. Here it is: http://www.villeetvillage.com/property_detail_PR022.htm

My vote goes for the train to Avignon as well. The car-rental offices near the Marseille train station are not in the best area.

Thanks Clarin, what a lovely property - a bit out of my price range! We have had our place in this area for a little over 10 years and have made many visits but we have not tired of the region; I'm sure you will have a great time. If you are looking for a good local restaurant, try Auberge St Roch or Relais des Dentelles, both in BdV. Vaison has a big market Tuesday mornings and Carpentras' is on Friday.

I've done it both ways. It is nice to see France on the way down on the TGV, but it you are transfering directly from your Boston flight, you may sleep half the time and miss the scenery. If you can spend time in Paris first, then I would take the train down.

Conversely, I like flying back. You can check your luggage at MRS and pick it up at BOS and not have to worry about it in between.

But the TGV is a great way to take one's first nap rather than airplane and airport stress.
