Paris to Milan itinerary

Hello

I'm going from Paris to Milan by train in May and then flying back from Milan to Bristol.

There are 10 days between arriving in France and leaving Milan. I'm spending the first 3 nights in Paris and then need to get to Milan, somehow! Any suggestions on places to visit would be good (I know shockingly little about mainland Europe, hence this trip!).

I'm open to sleeper trains or spending all day on a train with scenic views. I don't mind going through France or through Germany or Switzerland to get to Italy and then I'd like to spend a few nights in Italy before flying home.

Any suggestions for places or cities that can't be missed?

Many thanks!

The highlight of Switzerland IMO is the Jungfrau area around Interlaken-Grindelwald-Lauterbrunnen - the glacier-draped Alpine wonderland etched in your mind's eye perhaps when dreaming of Switzerland. And it is smack on a major rail route between France and or Germany and Milan - the Simplon Tunnel route.

spend a few days in the Interlaken area to savor Switzerland at its gorgeous best IMO.

For lots of great train info check out these fantastic IMO sites - www.seat61.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com - for Swiss trains www.swisstravelsystem.com.

Besides Central Switzerland and Brig-Domodossola journey, I would also suggest to take a look at more eastern regions with Luzern and Zurich as cities to visit and Bernina pass for a really nice train ride and scenic views.

Some sleeper trains you could take would be from Munich to Venice, Florence or Rome or from Paris to Italy or from Paris to Nice. If you had a railpass the pass would pay for the train fare itself but not for the optional types of sleeping accommodations - but you would save one night hotel costs and travel long distances by night.
