I would like to know the least expensive way to get to Giverney/Vernon from Paris by rail or bus?

i dont know about bus, and there may be cheaper than this, but the train to Vernon is straightforward, and there are taxis (less than 5 minutes), and perhaps shuttles or something.

The train to Vernon is easy, leaves from Gare St. Lazare, I believe. You will need to catch a taxi to get from the station to Monet's house and back. Be sure to note the train schedule and suggest you arrange your return taxi in advance. There is a taxi queue near the station but when you are at Monet's house you will have to call and hope someone shows up in a reasonable time. Info at http://giverny.org/transpor/index.htm

There are regular shuttle buses from Monet's house to the train station at Vernon. I do not remember the cost but I think it was reasonable.

The trainfare from Paris to Vernon is $23 for first class and $19 for second class each way.

For that price, I'd consider what we did: Sign up for minivan to Giverny. Since you're paying either $38 or $46 for the round trip, plus the metro to the train station in Paris and a bus or cab from Vernon to Giverny, you're paying almost as much as we did last year for the minivan--$60. Advantages:
1. They pick you up.
2. It takes a lot less time.
3. You're a lot more comfortable.
Another option is a bus tour. Last year they cost around $45.

I entered October 22nd and there is a train from the Paris St. Lazare, as Seamus said, at 8:16 and arriving in Vernon at 9:01. You really do not need to buy first class for 45 minute ride. Coming back there is one train leaving Vernon at 2:57 pm arriving back in Paris at 3:44 pm. There is a bus right outside train station going to Giverney or take a taxi and arrange to be picked up at the specific time or take a nice 5-mile (or kilometeres?)long walk to Vernon. I don't know about the afternoon bus. It is very easy to do it on your own and there are advantages
You won't need to wait to be picked up.
You will have more time and you will spend as much time as you want at your chosen spots instead of following a tour group
You're going to be very comfortable making all these simple arrangements on your own.

When we did it, there was a reduced roundtrip fare on the train (English speaking tourist info booth at the Gare told us) and a cheap bus from Vernon to Giverney. Took an early train and a late return (be careful not to miss the bus back to Vernon!!!) so missed the bus crowd in the garden and had time for the American Museum (really really good especially as there are no Monet's at Monet's house) and a wonderful and inexpensive lunch down the road at les Agapanthes.

Self tour beats tour bus, for price and quality..

Train from Paris to Giverny (Vernon) costs about 8 euros each way for seniors over 60. The bus from the train station to Giverny cost 2 euros each way (no senior discount) and takes only 10 minutes. I was there last week. I think entrance fee for the house and gardens was 6 euros. Buy a bottle of ice cold apple juice at the roadside stand where the bus unloads in Giverny. Costs only 2.30 euros and a piece of fruit cake is 1 euro.
