Paris to Cambridge
There are 3 of us traveling from Paris to Cambridge at the end of July. In terms of price and difficulty, is it a better idea to take the Eurostar and then a train to Cambridge, or is it easier to fly to Heathrow and then find our way to Cambridge? Thanks for any suggestions

RyanAir lands in Stansted, which is the closest airport to Cambridge. But you would have to fly out of Beauvais and there are strict luggage limitations.

Sorry, I discopvered that Paris-Stansted does not exist. But you could try this web site for cheaper fares:

The Eurostar is probably the easiest - and just get a cab from Waterloo to Kings Cross, easier with luggage and with three people not a great cost.
If you do want to look at flights, forget about Heathrow. Either go to Gatwick, and get the direct train to Kings Cross Thameslink, or with Air France from Orly to London City and a short bus ride to Liverpool Street (from where there's also regular trains to Cambridge). |
One other option - Flybe operate CDG to Norwich. Landing at 1830, you could get a cab to the station in plenty of time for the 1945 train to Cambridge, arriving 9pm. Or there's later trains, if you wanted an evening meal en route in Norwich.

My vote also goes to taking the Eurostar. Book ASAP to get the best price. As owain says, a taxi from Waterloo to Kings Cross wouldn't be very expensive. However, just to complete the picture, if you're packing light you could take the tube (Northern Line) directly between the stations for 4 GBP/person.

There are no flights from Paris to either Stansted or Gatwick so for these airports it's pretty much a non-starter - unless you fancy being routed via Amsterdam or Edinburgh (for example)
Personally I'd fly to Norwich - but that's just to be different |
And for the sake of completeness, there's no longer a bus from London City to Liverpool St: it's now got its DLR station, so you could theoretically take that to Bank/Monument and the Northern Line from there to Kings Cross.
But Eurostar - taxi - Kings Cross is the most straightforward, and probably quickest once you've factored in check-in times, baggage collection and general airport embuggerances. |
