Paris to Bordeaux, for vanity first, touring second
 

Had a horrible haircut yesterday. My hairdresser, French, went back to live in France last September and yesterday I finally succumbed and got a hair cut for my trip. Ruined for all time is how I'm feeling today, but this too will pass. Anyway, I was thinking of taking a day trip, or over night trip to Bordeaux, to visit him, get my hair redeemed, and see some local sights. What's the best way to get to the City of Bordeaux, how long does it take, and what else should I visit in a day or a day and night while here. Any recommendations for a hotel? Don't laugh, please!

Where do you need to get to Bordeaux from? Seems like it could be a lot of time and expense to fix a haircut.

I'm not laughing but wouldn't it be better and cheaper to try to find a new hairdresser in your hometown?

Assuming you are in Paris, the best options to Bordeaux are the TGV, several trains a day from Gare Montparnasse. The train is over four hours but you leave from cental Paris. Flights are under an hour, Paris Orly would likely be the most convenient airport.

Cathinjoetown: I live in Manhattan, center of New York City, with I'm sure thousands of hairdressers (no, tens of thousands), and he was one of the few decent hairdressers I've found who knows how to cut hair without charging $300. His haircuts are the best I've ever had, and I like him. Since I'm in Paris thought it would make sense to visit Bordeaux and him at the same time. Any recommendations for an inexpensive but nice hotel?

anneinmanhattan, if you're bound and determined to do this, you take the TGV from Paris Montparnasse to Bordeaux St-Jean. BUT, the cheapest tickets are available 3 months out from your travel dates, so if this trip is going to happen soon, you're looking at paying WAY more than you could have.

Not sure what the prices are these days, but I used to stay at either the Hôtel Etche-Ona or the Hôtel Bayonne, both very close to the pedestrian street area - rue Ste-Cathérine - in the center of town. Both hotels owned by the same family. The Etche-Ona is very traditional Basque-like, and the Bayonne is modern.

There's lots to see and do in Bordeaux, but it depends on how much time you have and what your interests are. When you get this nailed down come back and let us know.

BTW, the worst haircut I ever got was in Bordeaux.

I was there last year and quite liked it. I think too long for a day trip (although possible), but you could do an overnight. I really liked the Hotel Majestic which is very central and right on the tram line and bus line to the train station or airport. the train takes about 3:15-3:30 hours.

Thanks all. Haven't heard back from Romain but actually cut it myself--so bad I couldn't stand it. Now it's too short for anyone to fix for about five months, but it does look better. So Bordeaux is off my list. St.Cirq--hopefully, your hairdresser's name was not Romain! Hate bad haircuts and have had so many.
