We are planning to travel to France in Sept and taking a side trip to Amsterdam from Paris. Looking for best way as would like to see some of Belgium also. (Prefer not to drive ourselves).

Trains are your best bet. I like the German rail site: www.bahn.de for checking all trains in Europe. Look for the word TIMETABLES on the left column of the page for the English version.

As someone who urges the use of rental cars for all kinds of travel within Europe, I agree - - train.<BR><BR>Or at least as far as Brussels, or even better, Maastricht (not on the way, by the way, but a pleasant detour, and gets you into Holland). That way, you could rent IN Holland, and return the car in Holland.<BR><BR>Or does anyone know - - is there a common agreement throughout Benelux for car rental/return?<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>

Rex,<BR><BR>This reply is for you. I don't know about what type of agreement there is, but I am renting a car in Amsterdam and driving to Bruges and then on to Antwerp where I will return the Alamo Rental car. The total cost for 3 days including VAT and a 45.00 Euro drop fee will be 134.00 Euro.

I am amazed at how far in anvance people ask these questions. In the next seven months Italy will have had three new governments and France will have at least one new one. Guess this never affects the transportation though.

Phyllis, if you've always wanted to ride on a fast, sleek European train, here is my suggestion:<BR><BR>http://www.thalys.com/<BR><BR>It's not the absolute CHEAPEST way to go, but it is one of the best, IMHO. <BR>You can't purchase tickets from the site if you are in the U.S., however. For that, go to:<BR><BR>http://www.raileurope.com/us/index.htm<BR><BR>Some will argue that you can save by purchasing your tickets after your arrival in Europe. If you have some time and you can do this, that is probably the case.
