Seattle just made it more difficult to decide about tipping in the US.
Not really.
That isn't to say deciding was ever hard (15% to 20%), just that nothing in Seattle has made that easy choice any harder.
Locals shouldn't be yelled at, disputed, put down, fought with about their local customs, imo.
To be clear, I didn't do that. I disputed some of the verifiable assertions that were made and which sought to cast a lack of tipping in moralistic terms, but I've consistently said that local norms should be observed.

Honestly, I don't think it is possible for someone to know less about a country than you know about the US. you think cliches are knowledge and, sadly, don't seem to care about digging any deeper. You are, in fact, one of the least curious, most superficial people I have ever encountered. You amuse me, though.

What is nasty and sad is trying to say that other countries are, in fact, inferior to others simply because they tip or don't tip. Nobody has been more judgmental on this thread than you.

Over the days I've read this thread with some amusement. The question asked was fair, the answers well I would suggest that many have dome themselves no favours. Justineparis summed it up for me in the post at 6.44 am.
It also makes me realise why I seldom post in the Lounge and keep my post to the country fora both here and elsewhere.

Also.. perhaps I should tell you, my husbands family IS American on his fathers side.. born and raised in Virgina.. and my husband made a choice to live in Canada in his twenties.. so perhaps I know a tad more then you think.. oh yeah, not possible, you know it all! lol
This thread is over for me, basically there are a few nutcases on it, but the answer to OPs orginal question was answered " no, it is not necessary or customary to tip a hotel maid in France".. even if a few strident Americans claim that's cheap and selfish( because they can only measure things by their own yardstick) .
