Not national insecurity.
It is a big deal for Americans to travel to Europe.
If you are from Berlin travelling to Paris is like a Philadelphian travelling to New York. You could drive there. You don't have to take a 7-11 hour, expensive flight across an ocean to get there.
Americans think that one has to be sophisticated to travel to Paris. Afterall, one is going to visit the Louvre, dine on foie gras and escargot, walk along the Rue Cambon to look in the windows of Chanel, eat macarons at Laduree, listen to the organ at St. Sulpice.
If Americans thought they were going to Paris to eat at Dave & Busters, visit an aquarium or zoo, and take in a ball game, they certainly wouldn't get nervous about what they were wearing.

The photos found in this blog:

are, I believe, a better companion to Kerouac's photos than those of The Sartorialist.

Thank you, dlejhunt. That's a really interesting & useful link. The woman walking the bichon frise could be my twin, so now I know what the Parisian version of me might look like. Guess I can always get away with just pulling things out of my closet then since she dresses like I do (but I'd rather have an excuse for shopping)! I do need bigger sunglasses, though.
Frankly, it's the shoes that always worry me most.
