Paris station transport
 

We will be coming through Paris from Brugge, BE via train. We change in Paris to go to Mont St. Michel. Apparently we come in Gare Nord and go out from the western station. What is the best way to get from the Nord station to the other in a timely, safe fashion with luggage. Thanks.

Some folks will tell you not to use the Paris Metro with luggage (too many flights of stairs)..you can check the routings using this website:
www.ratp.com....might be easier if you traveled by RER rather than Metro...or better yet, consider taking a taxi between stations.

The Montparnasse Metro station is enormous and you can be walking just in that station for a long distance. Moreover, I believe that the TGV leaves from an annex, which might lengthen the walking distance. If you are not familiar with the Paris Metro, take a taxi. The RER does not come close to the Montparnasse station.

If you want to go direct using public transport, you can take the Line 4 straight from Gare du Nord to Montparnasse station. However, as mentioned above, on arrival at Montparnasse you will have to walk some way (5-10 mins) through corridors, up and down stairs and along a moving walkway to get to the TGV station from the metro. The metro line 4 is often crowded and very hot, so unless money is a huge concern, I'd advise you to take a taxi. But bear in mind that at rush hour (around 5.30pm to 8pm) Paris traffic can be extremely heavy, so if taxi-ing, allow ample time for traffic jams!

We have done it both ways and the key point of your decision is "luggage". Take a taxi, it's right outside the door of the North station, it's confortable and convenient. It may cost a liitle more, but it is well worth it if you are dragging around luggage and trying to figure out where you are going. Depending on when you arrive, the wait should not be to bad. Have a good trip.
