Either they did no prep in advance and had no idea what they wanted to see/do OR they picked places wrong for them. If they wanted a beach/party vacation this would not be the way to do it. Perhaps they just didn't like Spain. Or perhaps they had no interest in museums, castles, fascinating architecture and the unique moorish cultural influence of Andalusia.
I have met people who were bored in many places in europe - almost always because they really wanted something similar to a week in a resort in Mexico or Hawaii.
Most people here could spend two weeks in those areas of Spain and still have a lot they wanted to see/do.
