Paris restaurants open in August
 

We are considering one splurge dinner during our August trip, but many of the ones on our short list are closed that month. Any suggestions?

Truffle season is December to March I believe. What do you mean?

Patricia Well's book, Food Lover's Guide to Paris, has a list of restaurants open in August, amoung other criteria.

Gretchen, are you aware of the shoulder season discount on pigs?

Arpège, Closerie des Lilas, Le Duc, Laurent, Lipp and the Dome, Pre Catalan, guy Savoy, are amoung those open.
Ducasse and michel Rostang are listed as two weeks.

Ciagel, if Ernest's ghost is lurking around Paris, you've offered places to bump into it. Suggest a re-reading of Sun Also Rises and Moveable Feast might be in order for proper appreciation.

Hi, Ron. I have checked my copy of Zagats 2002/03 and here are a few of the high-end restaurants listed under "July/August Dining," with the caveat: "As dates may change, call in advance to confirm." If there is another restaurant you're interested in and want me to check to see if it's on this list, just ask. Or if you need more info on a particular restaurant, ditto.

Le Grand Vefour in the Palais Royal is another lovely high end place; evocative of the Belle Epoque. Not sure if it's open in Aug., however.

May I suggest you ignore Zagats about Gerard Besson. In the early 80s. just a super place. In the 90s, all attitude and rising prices. If somebody knows anything about the past two years, I'll defer. But you can do much better.

At this place, where we'd dined three times, the last time was such an exhibition of rudeness that even some of the staff were embarrassed.

And as we departed, the owner and manager were at the front door expecting a tip, hands extended, not to shake, but to take. I simply couldn't believe it.

Well since Parisians don't stop eating in August I suspect there'll be some "adequate" place for a splurge..don't give up hope quite yet.

More and more places are open in August since our books in hand , have been published. I suggest emailing or ask someone you know who has the info.
