Paris restaurant recs.?
 

Hi, can anyone recommend any really nice but inexpensive or moderate (not more than 30 euro/pp) restaurants serving poulet roti and/or bouef bourgignon in the 5th and 6th (St. Germain area) districts?

I wouldn't swear to the boeuf bourgignon, but I know you can get poulet roti, within your budget, at Polidor (41, rue Monsieur-le-Prince in the 6th). Another good bet would be Perraudin (157, rue St-Jacques in the 5th).

Neither Polidor nor Perraudin takes credit cards. Seating at Polidor is at long communal tables; Perraudin has separate tables for each party.

You can get boeuf bourguignon and possibly dessert but no wine at Le Vieux Bistro right by Notre Dame. Simply fabulous! But the wine costs at least 25€ per bottle and they only serve full bottles.

But the boeuf bourguignon is tender and succulent. Mmmm. The dessert I tried there was tarte tatin with creme fraiche - just fabulous.

Beatchick, it's almost 11 p.m. here in San Francisco. But thanks to your description of Le Vieux Paris's boeuf borguignon and dessert has me craving this meal now! :-) It's fine about the wine-it's expensive even at home.

Not sure about the boeuf, but do recall poulet roti (or the equivalent) on the menu at one of my favorite new restaurants, Le Cosi at 9, rue Cujas in the 5th. Quite a great place - if you like places like Bizou in SF, you'd like Le Cosi - same sort of feel but a warmer ambience (not that Bizou is not friendly!) and in your price range.

Thanks Seamus. Unfortunately, I have not eaten at Bizou. Poulet roti is a simple dish but probably my favorite.

Artlover, thank you, but Le Grand Cafe is in the 9th district (I think) instead. I've been there a long time ago and I agree-it really is special.

Since we don't eat red meat, roast chicken is one of my favorite dishes in Paris, along with the chocolate dessert :)

Francophile, Le Vieux Bistro's really is the best meal I've had in Paris yet. You'd think it'd be really touristy being right by Notre Dame but it isn't. I hear that there is an old secret underground passage that connects to Notre Dame. They have a terrasse, too. If you're going with someone special they have candlelit dinners at night. Ooh la la!

I know you've requested places in the 5th/6th but if you happen to be in the area then you might try Le Grand Colbert. Did you see <i>Something's Gotta Give</i> with Diane Keaton &amp; Jack Nicholson? The Diane Keaton character says it the best place in Paris for roast chicken. And www.gayot.com names it one of the 10 Most Romantic restaurants in Paris. That website also mentions its &quot;typical brasserie cuisine&quot;, &quot;frescoes and ornate plasterwork, brass railings and painted glass panels&quot; and &quot;warm welcome and swift, smiling service&quot;. It's one of the places I intend to hit on my next solo trip. Also, Gayot gives it a price range of $$$ which indicates it's under $50 so this might be for lunch only.
