Paris Restaurant
Has anyone eaten at Sergeant Recruiter on the I'lle St. Louis. Did you like the food?
|
I'll probably get blasted into space for this! I've never been there but have passed it numerous times.
It is a "theme park type " restaurant..and that's streching it! If you have kids maybe it would be "fun" but I certainly wouldn't go there for the food! |
For whatever it's worth, this is the blurb from Rick Steves:
Nos Ancêtres les Gaulois and La Taverne du Sergeant Recruteur, next door to each other on rue St. Louis-en-l’Ile, are famous for their rowdy, medieval cellar atmosphere. They serve all-you-can-eat buffets with straw baskets of raw veggies (cut whatever you like with your dagger), massive plates of pâté, a meat course, and all the wine you can stomach for €36-38. The food is just food; burping is encouraged. If you want to eat a lot, drink a lot of wine, and holler at your friends while receiving smart-aleck buccaneer service, these food fests can be fun. Nos Ancêtres les Gaulois, or “Our Ancestors the Gauls,” has bigger tables and seems made-to-order for local stag parties (daily from 19:00, at #39, tel. 01 46 33 66 07). If you’d rather be surrounded by drunk tourists than locals, pick La Taverne du Sergeant Recruteur. The “Sergeant Recruiter” used to get young Parisians drunk and stuffed here, then sign them into the army (daily from 19:00, #41, tel. 01 43 54 75 42). |
Good characterization by the Rickster. Here is my own review from 2003 and I'm guessing it hasn't changed much:

We had dinner there, just the two of us-I'm sure it's more fun in a group. We were hungry and the place we were looking for was closed and someone had gone here and liked it. The soup was good and the boeuf bourguignon had a good flavor but too much fat, which really turns me off. They were very generous with the wine, which wasn't bad and tried to give me a second chocolate pudding dessert.

Why, Flyboy, I never knew you had any reviews out there in cyberspace! Very good review!

Awwww, thanks! :) The Igougo.com site is a good place to put trip reports in a somewhat disciplined fashion so I try to leave a few notes there for others and as a convenient place to refer back to when others ask about a place. It's kind fun, so give it a shot.

I should! I think StCirq has some trip reports posted there as well.

HI--For what it is worth, we ate there in 1992. The experience was very interesting and the food very disappointing, at best.
