Paris-recommendations for 6 hour layover
 

My husband and I are going to Greece at the end of August and we have a 6 hour layover in Paris. We would rather not spend it in the airport.We are arriving at CDG airport. Any recommendations? We have both been there before but is was about 20 years ago.

Is the 6 hour figure your total free time, after subtracting airport requirements??

I ask only because allowing for possibly flight late arrival, deplane time + time required to re-check in ahead for next flight = your actual time might be more like 3 hours, not 6.

Take a taxi into central Paris would subtract another 1 hour roundtrip. So then you're down to 2 hours.

With a true six hour layover, as outlinedin the previous post, I would take a taxi to the Montmartre area, visit Sacre Couer and have a meal at a local restaurant and walk around the area. This will likely beat any meals that you could get either on the plane or at the airport. Finally, if it is a friday afternoon you could visit the crypt of the martyr that ran down the hill ( mountain) after having been beheaded. His final resting place. Hence, Montmartre.

Assuming you don't have any luggage with you (sent straight thru by airline?), I'd take the RER into Paris--quicker than taxi, IMO. (But with luggage, it's a no-brainer, taxi for sure.) Pick just one place that is convenient to RER (plus short metro ride, if necessary) and enjoy it for a couple of hours.

I'm with Grandmere. Take the RER, get off at St. Michel, and there you are across from Ile de la Cite, Ste Chapelle, Notre Dame, Ile St. Louis, etc., with the Cluny museum a block or so in the other direction. You really only have the time to feel like you're in Paris anyway and what locale could feel more like Paris.

And I agree with LVSue's destination and sights to be seen there!

I'll third the idea for a meal. Especially since you've been before. Do some research, find the place of your dreams, and enjoy a 3 hour, 8 course feast.

If you are going to try this then take the RER to the St. Michel stop, go see Notre Dame and dine at Le Vieux Bistro across the street from ND or Les Bookinistes on the Quai Grand Augustins a few blocks from ND.

I sure wouldn't want to be at CDG for 6 hours, but it's hard to know how things will work out for someone who isn't familiar with the RER or how much time that will take.

I also would just take the RER down to St-Michel and wander around the islands or Notre Dame--maybe stopping into any cafe that took my eye or when I wanted a rent. Other choices would be to go a little farther and get out at Luxembourg and visit the gardens there and wander around that area and the Pantheon.

Usually when people say 6 hour layover, I think they mean the time on the official itinerary -- so I'm not sure I'd risk that for a few hours.
