Paris Rail Stations: Montparnasse vs. Montparnasse-Vaugirard

I noticed on the Voyages-SNCF site that some trains to Chartres are listed as departing from Montparnasse and others listed as departing from Montparnasse-Vaugirard.

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two or if there even is any difference?

Thanks very much.

Hi, You got me curious about your question as we did take the train from Montparnasse to Chartres last year. I have just looked on my Paris map and it shows Boulevard de Vaugirard runs down the one side of the station. It must be reffering to that side of Montparnasse? We just pitched up on the main station but beware! Even the "train Assistants" on the platforms told us to get on the wrong train! Check with more than one person.

Hi intrepid,

I just went through the train listings at www.sncf.com for a random date.

All of the trains listed leave from "PARIS MONTPARNASSE 1 ET 2".

Where did you find Montparnasse-Vaugirard?

Ira:

I saw the Montparnasse 1 et 2 also but will look again now and let you know in a moment.

All very interesting...when I input a travel date of 18 July (I know, too far in the future to actually buy the tickets but the schedule comes up anyway) there is a train listed (#3503) leaving at 0745 that supposedly leaves from Montparnasse 3 Vaugirard.

When I input other (April) dates it doesn't appear on the schedule at all.

Anyway, I'll just be very careful at the station if we decide to do this excursion in July.

Thanks all for the assistance.
