Paris Question for Elvira
Hey there, question for you, you Paris expert you. I leave Nov. 10 for my 3rd trip, tried Paris Las Vegas and got the blues, so back I go. CAn you tell me a little about the covered passageways? Someone referred to them in another posting as an example of early shopping. Also, can you give directions to the flea market in Vanves (sp?). Thanks :)

Dear Lori
I do not presume to be the excellent
Elvira, but I will offer the following information on the shopping passages.
If Elvira checks in she can I'm sure
enhance what I've written.
The passages I'm aware of are mostly in the 1st and 2nd. Here are a few.

Galerie Vero-Dodat, 19 rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau, metro les Halles
Shops include toys, children's clothing,
jewelery

Louvre des Antiquaires, metro Palais Royal, 2 pl du Palais-Royal.
Not really a passage, a buildng filled with antique dealers. Open Tues-Sun.
A browser's delight, very classy setting.

Passage Jouffroy, 12 blvd Montmartre (9th) metro Montmartre
toys, antiques, cosmetics, decorative
items
From there it's a short walk to one of my favorite chocolate and goody shops, A La Mere de la Famille, 35 rue du Faubourg-Montmartre.

Galerie Vivienne, 4 rue des Petits-Champs, metro Bourse
good tearoom, wine shop, others

Passage des Panoramas, 11 blvd Montmartre,in the north of the 2nd, metro Montmartre
Said to be the oldest arcade in Paris: antiques, vintage posters, art

Passage des Pavillons, 6 rue de Beaujolais,1st, metro Palais Royal
Gourmet foods, china, antique books

Passage des Princes, 97 rue de Richelieu,1st metro Richelieu-Drouot
has a coffee bar and lots of shops

I learned on my recent trip that some
family-owned shops that are open on Saturdays may choose to be closed on
Mondays, so take that into account.
Enjoy your trip.
Is this the same Lori who made the wonderful recommendation of the Hotel St. Christophe to me? If so, have a great trip! Wish I were headed back...
|
Yep, it's me. Glad you were happy with the St. Christophe.
|
Sabrina 7 Lori -- Where is the Hotel St. Christophe? Tell us about it -- rates, size of rooms, etc. etc.
Thanks,
Lori (also)
|
Re: St. Christophe -- It's located in the 5th district, 17 Rue Lacepede. Great neighborhood. It was about $100/night. Look at website http://digital.france.com/hotels/index and click on "Latin Quarter" to get more info on prices and feedback from people who've stayed there.
Elaine's hit alluvvem...Pavillons is a favorite because it's near Colette's old apartment. Louvre Antiquaires is for comparison shopping "wow that Louis XVI chair costs as much as 5 trips to Paris!" It's still pretty stuff, though.
For an outside antique shopping mall (a little off the galeries theme, but it is shopping, after all), the Village St Paul. Used to be able to find good junk at cheap prices; it's gone a little upscale lately. It's in the 4th, off Rue St Paul, somewhere.

The market at Vanves is easy to find (yeah, now that I have already done that). Take the Metro to the Vanves stop. When you get out, turn with your back to the overpass and cross the street. Go one block to your right and then make a left. Voila. Depending on time of year, it should run for as long as five blocks or so straight up.

If you find the fellow selling old advertsment displays (ceramic figurines and such), sing a Bruce Springsteen tune and get the best deals.

Bon Chance
