It's lovely there, one of my closest friends lives in the 14th. The rue Daguerre is a pedestrian street full of market stalls and shops. If you have access to a kitchen then you could buy great food there. Or cheese and bread for picnics. The bus (maybe it is 68) leaves from Denfert Rochereau and takes you right to the Hotel de Ville / St Michel area so it is convenient for transportation. There are so many great little neighborhood restaurants, one I particularly like is Les Sorcieurs (Witches). And you are close to La Coupole and the other big brasseries close to Montparnasse Gare.

I'm very fond of Montparnasse. I chose it for my honeymoon in 2000, in fact, because it's a "getting lost in Paris" kind of place, in contrast to more touristy places. There are the broad boulevards with the big brasseries, La Coupole, Dome etc., which are enjoyable. But I like the modest little neighbourhoods, too, like Rue Losserand -- baker, butcher, cheese shop, wine shop, little restaurant called Monsieur Lapin springs to mind.

Hi

I can't comment on the area. My wife and I stayed in the 15th arrondissement and that was OK. Is this your first visit to Paris?
Here is my trip report with pictures and links: http://gardkarlsen.com/Paris_France.htm . I have also made this Google map http://gardkarlsen.com/paris_france_map.htm where you can see the location of the hotel (marked in yellow) and I have also marked some of the attractions of Paris. Click on the markers for more info :d

If you are close to gare Montparnasse be sure to have dinner in one of the créperies -- some are as good as those in Brittany. Start with a galette (buckwheat and savory); finish with a sweet crèpe and be sure to drink cider with it (brut/dry is what I like). The classic gallette is a complet (ham, cheese and egg) my favourite is spinach and cream. If you dine on a weekend night they may have traditional music.
