Can anyone recommend any places that offer good, inexpensive (less than 20 euro) take away food in the Saint Michel area? Is it possible to get onion soup as a take away?

Needless to say, I don't mean fast food joints - thanks!

There are several shops around Place Maubert which is about 2 blocks from there--Blvd. St. Germain. I got some quiche there for a picnic on the grounds of the Cluny.

Anytime you see the poulet roti roasting on the street or in some of the local markets with potatoes below...it is the very tasty. Cheap excellent food. We used to take our chicken or market food with some wine and eat in the little parks off the churches or in the courtyard of the Cliny Museum.

If you don't mind chinese food (I know, a bit odd in Paris), Mirama Restaurant on 17, rue St.Jacques (less than 5 minutes walk from Place S.M.) isn't bad. You could have decent Cantonese takeway for less than 10 Euro.

There is one little Japanese restaurant behind Church St.Severin does cheap and half decent takeaway too.

I'd suggest you wander around and look for a "traiteur" which is similar to a deli providing meat, cheeses, etc and create your own take away. Then look for the boulangerie et patisserie...

Poulane is considered to be the best bread by many and they are located very near Place Maubert...
