Paris on Sunday-What is one to do?
As it turns out, one of our three days in Paris (in May) is going to be a Sunday. We are going to be staying in the 5th. Will there be anything at all open on Sunday? (Besides the churches!) Museums? Stores? Does anyone have any suggestions of things to do, or even wait to do until Sunday? Thank you!

Visit Luxemberg Gardens
|
where have you heard that things are closed on Sundays??
All museums are open, the river boats run, the Eiffel Tower is open, etc. etc. - just absolutely NO problem finding things to do . . . . . |
Museums are open on Sunday, and shops are open in the Marais. Big grocery stores, department stores, shops, and some restaurants are closed.
You'll have no problem finding things to do. |
There are 3 excellent outdoor markets on Sundays, Richard Lenoir at Bastille, the organic market at Raspail and at Place Monge.
|
Every time we go to Paris we make sure we are there on a Sunday. Why? Luxembourg Gardens, The Tuilleries, Place Vosges, walking along the Seine, or any of the many beautuful parks are the best on Sunday!
|
Sunday is a great time to do a Fat Tire Bike Tour... while there is very little driving on the streets, on a Sunday, there is less traffic :)
|
Will echo what's been suggested above. Check a travel book for museum and attraction hours -- there should be plenty of things open.
If all else fails, parks are great to visit. Will second the suggestions above for the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Tuileries and also suggest Parc Monceau, Parc des Buttes Chaumant, and Bois de Boulogne. |
I always try to be sure I'm in Paris on a Sunday so I can have brunch at the Musée Jacquemart-André.
It's Monday that's more problematic for tourists. |
Versailles? check their schedules, some Sundays they run all those great fountains.
|
what everyone else does... go to the Marais district...
|
So what about Monday? Many museums are closed and most markets. I know Jacquemart-Andre is open - but we did that last trip. Just wondering if anyone has done something special or different on Monday. We've done all the major tourist attractions, so are looking something different. We can always walk through neighborhoods, parks, gardens, etc. I'm sure we'll find plenty - but thought someone might have a good suggestion.
|
Thanks, everyone. For some reason, I thought I'd read several places that things were closed up in Paris (as well as most of France) on Sundays. I'm sure we'll find plenty to do on Sunday and Monday - it's our first time to Paris so it will all be good.

We always try to be in Paris on Sunday so we can go to the organic market at Raspail. At one end of the market there is a vendor who has a griddle and produces the best potato-onion-cheese galettes. We buy one for the trip through the market and one for the walk back to the hotel. YUM!
|
What do you do at home on a Sunday? Not too different, except dept. stores aren't open.
Lots of museums are open on Monday, if that's the only concern. Some are closed Monday and others Tuesdays. |
Go to Mass at St. Sulpice and stay for the organ recitel afterwards. You also can check out all the DaVinci Code disclaimers!

From Beating the Euro thread:
Author: Michael ([email protected]) Date: 03/18/2008, 08:04 pm On a Sunday morning take the métro to the Place des Fêtes, pick up picnic items at the market on the square, walk down to the top of the Parc des Buttes Chaumont and join the Parisians on the grass who are also having a picnic. |
Go to church :o)
|
Go to St Chapelle. The line for security is quite short since the law courts are closed.
Sacre Couer is also nice to visit on a Sunday. |
