Paris on New Years Day: No TV & No American football Games... what to do...

We'll be in Paris for New Years this year and while we have not really figured out our plans for New Years Eve, I am thinking about New Years day. Should we expect most public buildings and stores to be closed? What ideas do you have for New Years Day activities???? I'm no tadverse to hopping on a train for a day trip to a local event?

IME expect most museums to be open - even on Christmas Day last year some museums were open - expect lots of folks milling about as these type of days French seem to love to walk around.

Last Christmas Day I expected most stores, etc would be closed but many many stores - small food shops, cafes, etc were open so I would expect even more on New Year's Day.

We were there this past New Year's - on New Year's Eve we walked over to Place de la Concorde to watch the lighting of the Eiffel Tower at midnight and see the crowds - it was great fun although next time I will take mini bottles of champagne with me as that's what everybody else had!

New Year's Day was pretty quiet - a few restaurants were open - although I think the major museums are open unless it is their usual closing day.

If you are desperate for football - Joe Allens is probably open and has lots of TV screens

I have never heard of anybody saying they were bored on New Years day in Paris. Plenty of museums will be open, the churches will be open, some shops will be open, the parks will be open, the Eiffel Tower will be open, the boats will be running.

I go to the movies and am always annoyed that the 9am show is cancelled on December 25th and January 1st. For some reason, they think that people are not ready to go to the movies at 9am.
