Paris next week
 

We are due to fly to a Paris on Monday. With the strikes, we are considering renting a car and spending our time outside of Paris instead. We must make a decision soon. Anyone in Paris now who can tell us the conditions for tourists? Thanks.

the local is a joke when it comes to informing.
Moast tram buses and all taxis and uber are functioning.
Several metro and Rer lines are also ok.
I see no need for you to cancel.
Probably Kerouac a major contributor here and living in Paris will chime in.
Have a nice holiday. Don't be put off by some strike. Common thing in France.

Friends who returned from Paris last week reported having no problems.

I can't believe that someone would recommend canceling. Just returned..family of 5..

Arrived via multiple transportation: via train from Frankfurt (on time, as scheduled), via LAX-CDG flight (as scheduled) - then RER from airport to apartment (all good).

Within Paris: Louvre, Orsay, l'Orangerie, St. Chappelle, Christmas Market, drinks with friends, ice Skating, Eiffel Towel, Catacombs, dinner every night, I could go on....

Expect to walk. Uber / taxi readily available. Some sights close early (e.g. Catacombs @ 16:00).

I wouldn't dream of canceling.

So....we have decided to skip Paris this trip, and maybe try again next year. We have visited France quite often, but never have gone north of Paris. We only have a week, so we have decided to visit Amiens, Boulogne-Sur-Mer, and Senlis. I appreciate everyone’s advice. Actually we generally enjoy smaller cities when we travel, so I’m sure we’ll have fun. ( I have been to Paris before). Thanks!

Just read the strike has ended. I feel that I should take credit for it, as as soon as we changed our plans, we said that the strike would end. You are welcome France!

Where did you read that the strike has ended? The unions have called for the RATP strike to end on Monday, but there is no indication that anyone else is ending the strike just yet.

I just felt it might be a hassle to get around, particularly in the cold weather. Also, reading about the closing of the Louvre played into my decision. Didn’t cancel, just changed direction. As for the strike, I think I read too much into the article, and assumed that covered everything. So I cannot take credit for stopping it. We will return to Paris another time. Thanks for the help.

I think by Monday they'll all be running, if what the RATP said today is true. But of course you can check online.

Every line is supposed to be running normally tomorrow except for 5 and 13, whose unions did not vote for the end of the strike even though the majority of the employees are back to work even on those lines.

You mean that there are different unions for different Metro lines? That has to be nuts!

It is usually the same union for a line, but independent sections. Different metro lines have different work issues. The two main metro unions are UNSA and CGT, which are generally completely opposed in dealings with the government. But, more important, each employee is free to follow a strike call or not, even if they don't belong to a union. This makes strike predictions more complicated.
