Paris Navigo Card - Plastic Sleeve Necessary?
 

Hello, all...

I was looking at our Navigo Découverte cards in anticipation of our upcoming trip.

The plastic sleeve contains two cards:

-- the purple & green card with the chip
-- the white card with the name & photo

Is it permissible (or customary) to just carry these two cards around rather than keeping them in the plastic sleeve.

Does the plastic sleeve have an important electronic function -- protecting the chip, for instance?

The sleeve is a little bulky in my wallet...it fits, but it would be more convenient to not use it.

I just did a week in Paris and just used a carnet of tickets--as per usual. Navigo weekly cards work Sunday to Sunday so they would not work for me. If you have problems with your Navigo card, just ask for a carnet. For a casual traveler, it is just easier.

You do not need the plastic sleeve, but it is indeed there for protection. You don't have to keep it in your wallet. In fact, most people don't.

While I don't know or think that the plastic sleeve is required. Most people I see with the Navigo Cards have them in sleeve.

My navigoard has been in my wallet since more than 2 years now.
My picture is alittle bit battered, but that's all.

Is the Navigo Sunday to Sunday, or Monday to Monday??

I'm sure ssander has reasons for the decision, I want to keep mine in the plastic case because it's so much easier to swipe and carry that, then to have to fumble around every time you need to swipe it with opening a wallet, taking it out, and then putting it back in. For other security reasons, that even sounds like a bad idea (opening your wallet all the time in the metro station right at the turnstile) and I think there is greater risk of losing it that way. Of course I don't put the plastic carrier in a wallet, I carry it in a pocket or in a small side pocket of my purse/tote or whatever I'm using. This may be because I'm a woman, I have other things than just a wallet. And if you do, where are you carrying that wallet? Your pocket?

My navigo card is in my wallet, in my left front pocket of my jeans. My wallet is not even that thick.
Id card, bankcards, driving license, the cards I use most frequently for travel (the others will be stuffed in my backpack) and the odd 10 € banknote (I never have cash on me...).

Been doing that for years. At metro I take my wallet and pull a ticket. Even in Barbes :-). I pay attention to my surroundings, know my way and it has worked up to now.

If the sleeve is not necessary, I will not use it...makes my wallet thinner.

When traveling abroad, I only carry a few things in the wallet. The wallet has a metal ring that goes around my belt, and I tuck the wallet in my pants, so I like it to be a thin as possible.

In London I was able to tap the card reader without removing my wallet from my belt or the Oyster card (which has no sleeve) from the wallet. (The readers on the buses were a little high, and I had to stretch a bit :-) )

Hope this system will work in Paris. (I <strong> think</strong> I did the same thing in Paris last year--though with the sleeve), but I can't remember.)

Sorry for the mistake. My girlfriend, who lives in Paris, told me it would be useless to me because it began on a Sunday and I arrived midweek to midweek. Thanks for the clarification.

Most Parisian women just drag their handbags over the Navigo target to validate their passage.
