Paris Museum Review: "The Cluny"

Most visitors to Paris make time for the Louvre or the Musee Orsay. But if you're interested in Medieval history and the world-famous Unicorn tapestries, don't overlook the Musée National du Moyen Age, a.k.a. The Cluny, located in the 6th arrondissement near the Sorbonne. Yes, Julie, the Cluny is a great place to visit for the tapestries! Photos are allowed, too, even though the room is very dark.

The Cluny is wonderful. The first time we took our daughters to Paris - at 11 and 14 - it was the place they loved most - really fit in with their knights in shining armor fantasies (they had studied a variety of literature in their french classes in school).

The Cluny is amazingly one of the museums I still have not visited in Paris. Next year for sure.

I agree that the Cluny is outstanding. The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are breathtaking, and the museum hold many other wonderfully delightful treats. Thanks for raising people's awareness of it!

I love the Cluny so much...I go every time I visit Paris. Like others have noted, there is never a big crowd and the art on exhibition is well worth spending some time with. I can't wait to go back when I'm in Paris in a few week's time!

Anyway. I was saying that: Yes, Julie. The Cluny was probably our favorite museum during our trip last June. It's so much more peaceful and relaxing than the Louvre. I rather raved about it in my own trip report a few days ago. Thanks for bringing it the attention it deserves. (Your website pics and commentary are also fabulous as always, dahling.) |

I was never a fan of Medieval art until I visited the Cluny. It's a perfectly curated jewel-box of a museum. Enough stuff to be interesting, but arranged in ways that really immerse you in the wonder of Medieval art.

We loved the Cluny. DH is not a museum person. I had to pull him kicking and screaming into the Musee d'Orsay.
It helped that it was hot outside when we saw the Cluny, because it was cool inside. We did both sit for a long time and study the Lady and the Unicorn. It wasn't something you could fully appreciate in a few minutes. The amusing thing was that although the museum was free, I spent $90 in their gift shop! |
It's only free the 1st Sunday of the month. Otherwise, there is an 8.50 Euro entrance fee...but well worth it!
