Paris Museum Pass sites open on Sunday and Monday?
 

Hi,

We'll be in Paris at the end of the month from Saturday through Tuesday. I was thinking of getting the 4 day Paris museum pass, but I would appreciate any suggestions as to where it can be used on Sundays and Mondays.

We were actually thinking of visiting Versailles on a Saturday, because I heard it's less crowded (and the fountains would be on), but could it be Versailles is more crowded on Sunday because a lot of Paris sites are closed? Of course there is more to Paris than museums, but any thoughts on places that are open on Sunday or Monday would be appreciated.

From my research on Paris the major sites are closed on Monday or Tuesday. You should have no problem on Sunday with the museums and monuments.

What museums or sites are you interested in seeing? The Louvre and Orangerie are closed on Tuesday. Orsay is closed on Monday. I think most of the museums are open on Sundays but maybe you have checked the hours on the ones you are planning to visit. You can use the pass for some sites also - La Chapelle and Concierge, which are probably open on Sunday and Monday.

I just looked on the Paris Museum Pass website and there are links to most of the museums and monuments they have access to, and the link will take you to practical information about the attraction. I checked a few and it does list the days that they were closed and their open hours. It might be a good idea to look there, determine what you want to see and then check the open/close times.

You can buy the museum at the first museum you visit. A 4 day pass to be worthwhile , you are going to have to spend all your time in museums! I avoid lines by buying tickets at Fnac or for the Louvre going to the underground entance in the Caroel de Louvre. Your pass is going to be of limited use on Mon and Tues.

Thanks! My sense was that many places were closed Monday, and a few were closed Sunday, but it's a good point that the Louvre is open except Tues. I'm not usually a huge day-by-day planner so I was just trying to get a sense of whether enough places we might want to visit would be open. It's true that the best way to do that would be to make a list and check each one but I figured someone on Fodor's might have done that for me. ;)

I've never heard of any museum that is closed on Sunday. That would be very strange as weekends are the main days people have to go to museums.

Hmmm... how could we have checked the open and close hours if we didn't know which ones you were interested in?? :)

I typically buy the pass just so I have flexibility and can avoid the long lines - I usually don't save any money doing this but I save time - which is more important on vacation.

I was just there a couple weeks ago and we knew we would only visit Louvre, Orsay and Orangerie. The price for each admission totaled 25 euro I think. The pass was 33 euro I think. We decided to buy the tickets and did that at the ticket/tabac in the Carousel shops (very close to the Rue Rivoli entrance). That was a great place to get all of them - no line at all!

I would coordinate your Versailles visit with the fountain display - it is really cool to see! I can't remember if that is on Saturday or Sunday, it's been a few years.

oh, I found one -- the Postal Museum is closed on Sunday (in Montparnasse). I actually enjoyed that little museum, but it's the kind of place you go when you have seen about all the others.

I loved the Post Museum too! They had a great selection of post cards there; I bought several Babar cards. I combined that with the Bourdelle Museum for a lovely morning.

Many museums have discounted prices on Sundays or in the case of the Louvre I believe it is free on the first Sunday of each month - perhaps you will not get the maximum benefit of the card if your museums that day are normally discounted or even free?

Not sure of current status but traditionally that has been true of Sundays and yes all museums are open on Sunday - heck one Christmas Day not long ago some museums were open!

In the future starting about a year from last August the Louvre and Orsay will be open for a one-year trail seven days a week.
