Paris Museum Pass/Railway Pass
 

I have heard good things about getting the paris museum pass, but is it worth getting the pass for the metro/rer? and if so where online do buy or do we wait until we are in paris to buy? we will be in paris for 5 days in july and will be hitting all the major sites.

also we will be in rome for 5 days, is it worth it to get a railpass and museum pass as well? i believe their pass is both in one? we want to hit the major sites there too.

Carte Orange is a good deal for five days but only if it conforms to the Monday to Sunday only formula - now named Navigo Pass.

Buy any passes there, including museum pass - transit passes at any metro/RER station - museum passes at any museum -keep in mind on Sundays many museums are discounted so pass is not quite as valuable perhaps that day (Louvre free 1st Sun of each month i believe.)

It also gets you to the head of the line for entry. Most musuems are closed on either Monday or Tuesday.

If you like to walk as i do then you will find that many Paris main sights are in a surprisingly compact area and thus you may not be taking the metro that much (also depending on where you hotel is located) - if not doing a whole lot and your days do not comport to the Mon-sun scheme of the Navigo pass then by all means buy a Carnet of ten tickets at once - these can be used by anyone in your party and the cost of 10 would equal about 6 tickets bought individually. And if you have tickets left over you should be able to use them in future years - i still have some old yellow metro tickets that work just well. Each ride inside the city center is one ticket, regardless of destination - outside the city centre there are RER lines into the suburbs that charge as to zones. But any metro ticket will take you to any metro station and you can ride all day as long as you do not exit if you want. RER lines inside the city center are considered like metro lines for tarifaction purposes. www.ratp.fr is the official Transports Parisian (sp?) web site for metro, bus, tram and RER info.

If you have your sightseeing planned, you can spreadsheet what transport you will need to get from your hotel to each place and back.

If it adds up to less than 21,80€ (the Navigo deposit plus Orange), go with carnet tickets. If you will need more than one carnet, then the Navigo isn't a bad way to go - and you can re-use it when you return to Paris.

Once more: if your 5-day sojourn doesn't fit between a Monday and the following Sunday, a transport pass is less likely to pencil out for you - but it might. For example, if you arrive on a Sunday, your travel that day won't be on the pass, but Monday through Thursday will. It all just depends.

My wife and I spent a week in Paris last year and thought that both passes were among the best money we spent. Hoping on a a train or walking into a museum whenever you felt like it was an incredible time saver.
