Paris May 23, 2013. What should I wear in Paris?

Today you should wear pretty much everything you brought, and you may need to buy some more.

The temperature is 52F, winds about 15 with higher gusts. Hard rain showers interspersed with bright sun. Tomorrow will be a little cooler -- high 40's -- with more rain. Sunday will be about the same as today with little or no rain. it is a pattern.

I wore tropical wool trousers, long-sleeve shirt, a cashmere sweater I just happened to throw in the bag at the last minute, and my LL Bean goretex parka. I was not too warm. My wife was similarly dressed but added gloves. Umbrellas blowing inside out everywhere in Montparnasse. But maybe it will wash some of the pollen out of the air. People are standing in the parks hacking away. Moi aussi!

Miserable? Pas de tout! We had a great day in the 19th, 11th, and 10th, but this is the kind of thing that makes me sorry for people who plan for every minute. A walk in the Tuileries might be no joy, whereas Buttes Chaumont was fine (bigger trees!)

More later!

LL Bean In Paris! Your wife too?

That takes courage.

tarquin May 23rd, 2013 05:13 AM

The LL Beaner, the better. The weather this year has been terrible in England too. At least you have sun at home to look forward to!

amer_can May 23rd, 2013 05:34 AM

LL Bean ( a travelling staple) was very useful in MAD April 2012, also!! However adult son's camo hunting cap looked a little funny!!! Weather has been awful but hey..Paris, Madrid, San Seb., Lisbon what more could you want..(lots of other places perhaps.)

kerouac May 23rd, 2013 08:52 AM

Today feels almost like winter to a lot of us.

amer_can May 23rd, 2013 10:03 AM

Don't travel without a pashima type shawl/scarf..Comes in very handy. Takes up no room, easy to curl up in on the plane, train, handy to cover tall bodies shoulders when the bed covers are too short and finally wonderful feeling for whatever you use it for..Am never without mine when away from home on travels. It's cold in western canada today also!! For late May UGH!!!

samoca May 23rd, 2013 10:52 AM

I was in Paris in first week of June 2009 and it was in the low 50s F and raining all week! I was really glad I brought a lightweight raincoat (and a fold-up umbrella). It was pretty dismal and cold (after a very hot month in Florence that May!), but it was still Paris.

socialworker May 23rd, 2013 11:32 AM

So glad to hear that you are making the best of crummy weather, Ack. I hope it improves but it is great to know that you are having a good time!

margo_oz May 23rd, 2013 12:24 PM

Yikes! That's midwinter weather (and wardrobe) here! Now I'm worried about just how I will cope with cold in December in Germany and Scotland?

aliced May 23rd, 2013 03:55 PM

We had a chilly spring visit in Paris once, where on top of at least 3 thin layers including long raincoat, had to make a stop at Galleries Lafayette for a longsleeved thin wool 'undershirt.' Take it with me everytime I travel from Oct-April anywhere! To "margo_oz" it's all about merino wool layers.

aliced May 23rd, 2013 03:59 PM

Also margo_oz, 800 lightwt down jacket which packs into its own pocket (use as pillow on plane!)-- Bringing that to Switzerland as well as a Marmot waterproof (not repellent) paperthin rain parka. Think this covers all weather incl. 40-degree temp changes up ever so high....

Mathieu May 23rd, 2013 05:22 PM

Three days ago here in my corner of S. Ontario, the temperature was 28C with humidity that made it feel like 31C. Tonight the low is 3C with wind and rain to make it feel like -3C.
Crazy temps everywhere.

Mathieu May 23rd, 2013 07:43 PM

Actually, 2 hours west of me, they've just reported snow flurries...
Yup, on May 23rd.

amer_can May 23rd, 2013 08:32 PM

Same out in the west..20 miles from my lovely flowering hanging baskets there is a veritable blizzard and we have very cold rain..Go figure..Need to layer where ever your path goes!!

Ackislander May 23rd, 2013 08:49 PM

Well, it is 4C this morning -- what, 38F? -- in the Ile de France.

At least we have control of heat in our apartment rental!

We have firm lunch plans, but we may add a museum and another couple of long bus rides since it is supposed to rain this afternoon and evening.

So much for the capris and flip flops!

kerouac May 24th, 2013 04:35 AM

Looks like today's afternoon maximum is 9°.

sueciv May 24th, 2013 05:39 AM

..nice day to visit the passages Kerouac provided pictures of a couple of weeks ago.

sigh...dreary or not...I wish I was in Paris

tdk320n May 24th, 2013 06:09 AM

This is the coldest and wetness that I have ever felt in my many years of coming to Paris in May.
I just celebrated my 83rd birthday in PARIS and decided it was OK to take it easy for 1 day and spend a day in the apartment reading and watching a movie on my PC.
I am here for 3 weeks .
Today back to my usual walking , people watching and just enjoying life in a beautiful city.
For a birthday treat I saw a performance of LA GIOCONDA at the Bastille Opera House. A lovely evening.

socialworker May 24th, 2013 06:17 AM

Happy Birthday! What better place than Paris to have a b/day and you should spend it in whatever way you enjoy.

Your words hearten me, tdk, b/c I was telling DH the other day, that since my current passport expires this coming February and we just got back from the UK w/no international trips planned, I would probably send it off to be renewed right before we go to Cape Cod for 2 wks at the end of summer. I added, "It will probably be my last one" (I was 65 last month). He was appalled at my saying that!

amer_can May 24th, 2013 06:40 AM

65 Oh you "babe" I am appalled also. tdk320n..Can't top 83 but I'm close and I will keep my passport up to date , my travel togs handy and a carryon bag close at hand "just in case" Never stop adding notches to your travel belt!!

tdk320n May 24th, 2013 06:43 AM

Hi Socialworker thanks for the greetings.
Each trip I plan I always think this might be my last so I add a few days to the trip.
I travel mostly solo so am concerned that my generally very good health will end.
My current one is more than 40 days. I was in ROME for 8 days, Venice for 4 , Florence for 6 ,now Paris for 17 and ending my trip in Nice for 9 days .
When I return to the USA I start thinking about and planning next years trip. Seriously giving thought to returning to Paris this fall for about 1 week to make up for the horrendous weather I have had this trip.

amer_can May 24th, 2013 07:01 AM

tdk320n Go girl..and solo at that..You are my heroine!!

socialworker May 24th, 2013 07:15 AM

May you keep enjoying many more trips, tdk!! Paris in the fall sounds great. We did have some raw, rainy weather there this past October, but we also had sunny, glorious, crisp days as well.

I too, know that one cannot take good health as a given and I am especially in awe of the people with health compromises to manage both on this board and those I encounter in our travels, who continue to soldier on! Kudos to those intrepid folks.

welltraveledbrit May 24th, 2013 07:38 AM

I agree with kerouac it's just like winter today despite the fact that it's the end of May! We return to California next week and while I'll miss alot about Paris I won't miss the cold grey "spring" weather everyone has suffered through. I really hope summer is fabulous in Paris this year, you deserve it!

kerouac May 24th, 2013 08:53 AM

Tomorrow, the weather is supposed to be even worse than today. Sunday should be better.

hetismij2 May 24th, 2013 09:07 AM

We had wet snow yesterday and it staggered up to 10C - at 9 pm. It was only 7C yesterday afternoon. It is a tad warmer today and there has been an odd light in the sky. Someone said they thought it was called the sun, but they weren't certain.:)

Ackislander May 24th, 2013 10:09 AM

tdk, you warm my heart!
