Paris Marais, Montmartre and fairies wheel
 

Dear Foderers,
I have been to Paris many times but ashamed to admit that I never made it to Marais! I managed to visit the saqre coeur but again didn't manage to know where to go in Montmartre ...this time I wish to do so hence my questions:
1. What is the Main Street or center or plaza of Marais? If I want to take a taxi, what to tell the driver so that he drops me to 'the' Marais?
2. Same for Montmartre ...heard there is a white touristic train usually taken by families with kids or handicaps or anyone who wishes to visit the area without walking ...where is it and from where I should take it?
3. Where is the faires wheel in Paris? I heard it is in a different area depending on the season...where is it at the moment?

I believe the ST. Paul Metro stop will put you in the middle of the Marais.

If I were taking a taxi, I would ask for Place des Vosges or Marche des Enfants Rouges or rue des Rosiers. Those are three points that sort of describe a triangle on the Marais. They are all different. The Musee Carnavalet is a reasonable sort of centralish point.

yeah, I would also say Place des Vosges. St Paul metro would be fine, of course.

I would not say Marche des Enfants Rouges as the center of the Marais.

Rue des Rosiers runs laterally thru the heart of the Marais - walk the length of it - from near the Pompidour Center to the Place des Vosges area. Very active at night and a gay meccas in Gay Paree! don't be bashful - it attracts a varied crowd - not all gay - nice little restaurants, for Paris a narrow lane - the Marais or 'swamp (I believe) area being one of the few that was not bulldozed by Hausmann in the 1800s.

I though the ferris wheel was taken down some time ago. I don't remember seeing it the last couple of trips.

The Ferris wheel was there in mid July. A friend of mine was in Paris and I remarked on the Ferris wheel in the distance in one of his photos. He said it was in the Tuileries.

LOVE the Marais, have rented a couple apartments there during trips in 2008 and 2011. It is actually a large area, and I discover new little nooks and crannies every trip I take. One of my favorite streets is Rambuteau, there are so many nice bakeries and specialty shops that are a foodie's dream come true. I like Berko and Pain de Sucre especially.

A nice find too was l'As du Falafel, couldn't believe how crowded that place was... for good reason though , the falafel was huge, delicious AND cheap!

If you've never visited the BHV, that is also a nice place to see on a rainy afternoon... you might find some unique items to take back home :)

The Marais is also the Jewish Quarter in Paris and you'll see many orthodox Jews clad in black with those funny hats and long beards - adds to the lure of the place though currently some synagogues here have been the venue of protests against Israeli actions and have on occasional become violent with shop windows sacked, etc.

When will you be in Paris? The ferris wheel is only there a few times a year. I don't know exact dates but it's definitely there while the fair is on in July/August and also around Xmas/New Year's.

I've seen it in October; I have a photo of it.
