You MUST do Les Marais on Sunday! There is so much life in there, and all the boutiques open, by the evening all the starving artists come out and sing, dance. It's fabulous!

Am I the only one for whom this is my least favorite part of Paris?
We walked through the Marais once again yesterday and heard very little French. I believe that most of the people we saw were North Americans. The shops were tourist traps with over-inflated prices. The cafe we stopped in didn't even pretend to be Parisian.
Couldn't get out of there quick enough.
Maybe it's just me.

I actually stay in the Marais every time I go to Paris, precisely because there are places where you only hear French. Try the North Marais closer to Republique-there are lots of local bars and restos where you're the lone English speaker. I usually go in the off season, and tend to try places that are not in guide books, so maybe this has something to do with it.

I just returned from Paris last Wednesday and there were tons of tourists from around the world, especially Asia and Easter Europe. I did hear English more often than in the off season, but it was not only North Americans using it. Many of the Asian tourists attempted their communications in English. It truly has become the international language.

Here's google map plan. Thanks a lot. You saved me a lot of research. I wasn't happy with the guidebook walk trips. But this doesn't seems very optimized to me.

And the Richard Lenoir market on Thus and Sundays is a must. Try Le Bouquet St Paul cafe on corner of Rue StPaul and rue St Antoine. a very local cafe and they sell Berthillion ice cream!
