Paris Louvre Area Hotels.
 

We are going on a canal trip but will be staying in Paris before an after the trip. Does any one have any suggestions on where to stay. Has any one stayed at the TIM Hotel PAlais Royal Louvre?

We recently stayed at the Hotel Brighton on the rue de Rivoli. It is a couple of blocks up from the Louvre. We had a deluxe double facing the Tuilleries for 160 Euros. Nice place but personally I am not that sold on that area.

I don't know this particular hotel, but Timhotels are a chain of 2** hotels that are perfectly comfortable. Very basic, but fine.

If you're interestsed in a nice 3* hotel that isn't too pricey, consider the Mansart, which is just off the Place Vendôme and convenient for the Louvre, the Tuileries, the shopping along the Rue St-Honoré, and other good things.

We have stayed at Le Relais du Louvre, www.relaisdulouvre.com, a three * across the street from the Louvre. Doubles were 145 Euro and the staff was very helpful. It is also within 2 blocks of 2 metro stops.

My favorite area to stay. I have walked on St Honore and saw the Tim Hotel. I have stayed at the Hotel du Louvre ( now too expensive, stayed off season). I have also stayed at the Hotel Lotti ( another good deal off season in Nov for $99 Euros a night). I stayed at the Hotel Louvre Montana ( Rue de St Roch) quaint hotel with tiny elevator(lol) with 4 rooms to a floor. Half block from Rue de Rivoli. Quiet hotel about a 2 star and paid $89 Euros a night. I just stayed at the Clarion ST James & Albany and got $196 Euros a night. Enormous room, great location right on Rue de Rivoli and right around the corner from Louvre Montana.

ok i forgot some things. Hotel Lotti is on Rue de Casteliogne. St James and Louvre Montana are half block from the Tuileries Metro. Great location. I will only stay in the 1st arr.

I also stayed at The Brighton Hotel in 2001 and doing so again this May. in, I will be in the double deluxe facing the Tuilleries like I was before. My room was very big and for me, traveling alone, the area was ideal. The hotel staff was extremely pleasant to me. I have no complaints except it is a little pricier this time around but then what isn't!

There have been several recent posts about the St-James etc., one of which called it a dump. What was your experience, Sunshine? When we last stayed there it was definitely a dump, but that was a while ago.

I've also stayed at the Louvre Montana, thought not recently, so I'm glad to hear others still like it.
Fantastic location, 15 minute (max) walk to the Louvre, 5 minutes to Tuileries metro stop, another 5 minutes to Concorde metro stop.

I've stayed at the Relaise du Louvre as well, last November. LOVED it...
From where are you barging? You have a crew or are you bare-boating?
A bunch of us did this in June, 2002. We bare-boated through the Cote d'Or. What a great time. Locks are not easy, but still a great time!

We are going with a group Called French Country Waterways and will be doing Burgundy--Cote d'Or area. Someone told we should be staying in the Left Bank Area, any thoughts on this

I don't think there's any "should" about staying on the Left Bank--or the Right Bank, either. It all depends on what you prefer. Many people like the LB (especially the 6th) for its general liveliness and street markets, the Luxembourg Gardens, and the Músée d'Orsay Others like the RB for easy access to two of the largest dept. stores (Le Printemps and Galerie Lafayette) and the boutiques along the Rue St-Honoré, not to mention the Louvre, the Palais-Royal, the Marais district, and the Tuileries Gardens.

There's a lot to be said for staying in either area. It's pretty hard to go wrong in central Paris.

I second Underhill's comments. But I will add my 2 cents about prices.

My general impression was that prices on the Right Bank---near the Louvre/Hotel de Ville---were considerably higher than elsewhere. Cafe prices, especially.

We haven't stayed on the Right Bank, so others are invited to correct me if this impression is incorrect. .

I have most often stayed in Paris 1 on the right bank, so I know it better so I like it better, so I stay there more often, etc. That said, the left bank has imo many more choices for casual and spontaneous and economical dining.

loon,before I discovered the Bonaparte, I used to stay in the First arr. the oldest neighbohood in Paris.

I have stayed few times at the DUCS DE BOURGOGNE, 19, Rue du Pont Neuf, minutes away from Notre and the Louvre.The tel. is 01-42-33-95-64..

To Underhill-
I just stayed at the St James in March 04. The room was enormous for me and my sister. We overlooked a small courtyard. Everyone was very nice in the hotel. I got a good rate. The rooms were clean, the bathroom big with a tub and a shower stall. If I wasn't with my sister I would have stayed at the Louvre Montana but they wanted almost the same price as the St James. For price it was better to stay at the St James. Plus my sister has champagne tastes.......lol
