Actually, the first week in September isn't as bad as later on in the month in terms of being busy in hotels, so that is a bit on your side. Because there generally aren't very many trade shows in the first week. School in Paris starts on September 3rd this year, though, and that kind of signals the beginning of the Fall season when things pick up from the doldrums of August.

Also, I see various trade shows in Paris starting with September 6th. There is a big cycling trade show but I think it starts 9/13, and most others start after you leave. There is a big Maison & Objet trade show starting 9/6, though (home decor).

We are going to be in Paris at the end of Sept. and we had a difficult time getting reservations for hotels we wanted and I was looking in early May. I would advise anyone traveling overseas in the fall (it is prime season) should book hotels in advance (as early as possible) so that you will have a hotel when you get there.

Back in November 2014, I started booking flights/hotels for a trip to Paris/London/Dublin in March/April 2015. As mentioned by others above, I found that many of low-priced rooms at the hotels we wanted were already booked. I ended up booking the hotels through Venere.com, and got good prices on our second- and third-choice hotels.

So, short answer ... yes, I'd start booking now if I were you

Especially when the OP's trip was 18 months ago!
