no, it really isn't the case all the time as I just stayed at the Villa Beaumarchais in Paris in the 3rd arr and the rate on booking.com was at least 50 pct less than their own website, as I never would have stayed there at the rate they wanted (let alone the rack rate which was double what I paid). September is a pretty busy time in Paris, also, but I found discounted rooms available, at least at the expensive places. booking.com is an affiliate of Priceline.
Now I did use the Accor website to book a Mercure in Toulouse, and it was the best rate there, I guess, but for that kind of hotel I really didn't spend a lot of time checking around.
Just checked the tourism hotel report by the Paris chamber of commerce -- there are 1500 hotels in Paris with 78,000 rooms and about 2300 in the Paris region with 147,000 rooms.

I don't have a comment on hotels, but your statement about being busy caught my eye. We just returned(Sept. 8th-Sept.22nd) and I have never seen so many people everywhere! We've been going just about the same weeks for many years and I've never seen it so crowded.
Good Luck!

"the majority of those listings are the big mercure, holiday inn hotels" - no, it's you not knowing how to search!
Sort them by price, if the option "high to low" is not available, skip a couple of pages to get to your price range.

Thank you to those of you who answered my post with kind remarks and useful information. I was dismayed by some of the unfriendly and condescending remarks some of you posted. That has not been my experience on Fodors before. I found a room several days ago at a hotel in the 7th where i have stayed before. Again, I wanted to know what was going on that weekend that put the hotels in such high demand ie. sporting events, fashion week, conventions etc... I have stayed in Paris many times and know how to find a hotel. However, the purpose of this forum is to share information, and it is always fun to get suggestions. Interesting to know that it will be fashion week and likely quite crowded everywhere!

Sorry mate but your OP and title were completely misleading. People looked at it and thought you genuinely thought there weren't rooms to be had. You want kinder answers, phrase your questions better. Sincerely, go back, look at your first post and then tell us by what means we were supposed to discern your intent?
