<<<There are so many other wonderful places that I find more interesting.>>>

Sorry, but nothing in Poland can compete with Paris.

I think I would have to say: "Which Paris are you talking about?".

I love the Paris most Fodorites talk and write about. The beautiful window displays, romantic restaurants, awesome museums, lovely parks, fascinating churches...not to mention major landmarks and walks along the Seine. The Isles. Crepes. I could go on and on.

But I'm now planning my 7th trip...a high school graduation gift for a grandchild. She is, let's say, different. Vegetarian. Very into Bohemian style, books, music, etc. She's go-go-go from the moment she wakes up. Where I've always stayed in the 6th or 7th, this time I'm aiming for the Marais or (most likely) one of the Paris Vacation apartments in Palais Royal. I figure the Palais is a place I could let her go out by herself...in the gardens...when she just has to get away from the adults. I've never gone up to Montmarte, but we'll probably go up there several times. She's smitten with it. I will probably get a tour guide, focusing on the Revolution. (She loves Les Miz).

So it just depends on which Paris you're looking for. :)

Ha ha, "let her go out by herself"? A high school graduate?

hetismij2 Jul 30th, 2017 07:15 AM

Kerouac, if I said where I prefer over Paris it would soon be overrun, so I'll leave you Parisians, along with those in London, Cambridge, Oxford, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Venice etc to enjoy your tourist hordes.

Not a city person.

Loacker, no great loss. Hate away. I didn't say I hate the place, just it holds no appeal. I would have to visit it to hate it. I can't hate something I don't know, unlike you.

I liked Paris so much that I moved here 10 years ago.
Don't kid yourself - it isn't easy - and you will just keep doing the same things you did at home, only without a car or air-conditioning.

I bet it's your own backyard, LOL. Since you have no interest in Europe's greatest cities.

We know a couple who lands in London , rents a car at the airport and
drives away to visit the British countryside. Every year.
There is no point in arguing about people's interest and taste.

As for " tourist hordes", I gladly put up with groups of people in order to see Venice,
the Coloseum, Las Meninas, the Kremlin, Hermitage, Van Gogh's self portraits,
Bruges , Sagrada Familia, Alhambra, Dachau, Prague....
..the list goes on..

Beats our background!

Sadly, I've only been seven times (plus a day-trip from London) since I retired in 1999...can't compete with some of you.

If I could afford it, I would definitely go once or twice a year to Paris...It's magical!

(We always go in May or the fall. There are still lots of tourists, but not like what I've heard regarding the summer.)

not background....backyard!

kerouac Jul 30th, 2017 12:17 PM

Frankly, as a Parisian, I can't wait to return to Saigon again. Seen enough of Paris.

Pegontheroad Jul 30th, 2017 02:11 PM

Loacker: Thanks for straightening me out on Paris vs Poland. Gosh, now I guess I'll cancel my plans to go to Poland.

StCirq Jul 30th, 2017 02:21 PM

There is taste and beauty all over the world. Of course not everyone is drawn to Paris, why should they be? It doesn't make you special to think Paris is special and everyone should love it.

RobertaL Jul 30th, 2017 04:05 PM

I've been to Paris 8 or 9 times.

Perhaps I'm alone here, but Paris is on my mind... pretty much, every single day.

Traviata Jul 30th, 2017 04:12 PM

No...you are not alone.......it is on my mind "pretty much, every single day" too......

xcountry Jul 30th, 2017 04:28 PM

I wonder if this need to return to Paris frequently has a genetic base, perhaps similar to the great migration in Africa.

thursdaysd Jul 30th, 2017 04:38 PM

I've been to Paris several times. i've enjoyed Paris. But I can't work up much enthusiasm for going back. I could have added it to a couple of trips recently, which included other parts of France, but chose not to. London, on the other hand....

janisj Jul 30th, 2017 05:01 PM

I've been to Paris about 8 or 10 times and I do like it (a lot) . . . But my '2 or 3 times a year place' is London. And my 'every year must visit at least once' places are Scotland and Yosemite. Everyplace else is gravy :)

danon Jul 30th, 2017 05:55 PM

My "every year must visit place " is Spain.
As pp said , everyplace else is a bonus.

denisea Jul 30th, 2017 06:43 PM

I love it and will make my 7th trip next year. I can't wait and always miss Paris. I am not lucky enough to go every year but try to not too much time go by before going back.
