Getting to St Mawes/Cornwall from London

Has anyone been to the town of St Mawes in Cornwall. We would like to come over from the US for a family wedding there in May but are finding that it is not easy to get to from London. We would be flying into Heathrow.
What would be the easiest way to get there?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Train from London Paddington to Falmouth, which is just across the estuary from St Mawes - that's between five and five and a half hours on the train. Then either the ferry or water taxi across to St Mawes, or rent a car in Falmouth and drive round the long way.

Another option would be train to Truro (4h20m to 4h40m) and bus to St Mawes (1hr).

http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/ is the rail company serving Cornwall from London, for fares and schedules.

You can fly from London to Newquay, I think from London Gatwick, and then hire a car from Herz at the airport.

Car hire : http://www.newquaycornwallairport.co...rport/car-hire

Train down to Falmouth would mean a change in Truro, and then a taxi down to the Ferry, but the last trip across is 4.15 - see http://www.falriver.co.uk/frl/ferries/st_mawes_ferry. It is a lovely way to go if you have time and do not need a car to get about when you are down there.

Going down London to Truro by train is lovely after Exeter, but long. And linking in with a bus Truro to St Mawes could be difficult after 4pm - five buses a day and none on a Sunday - see link http://www.westerngreyhound.com/route_pdf2/551.pdf
One can certainly hire cars in Truro - Herz operate from the railway station.

St Mawes is a lovely village and you will really enjoy it, just remember that the Cornwall coastal region is a hilly place!

well, there are some ups and downs in some places along the coast path, but the bit around st. Mawes isn't that bad. there is a lovely walk you can do from St. Mawes by getting the tiny ferry from St. Mawes to Point, then along the side of the estuary out to St. anthony's point where the lighthouse is which is within the reach of most people i think - even me!

but I digress. to get to St. Mawes, there are several options as the others have said. Flybe fly daily from LGW to Newquay and are showing one way fares of about £35 pp at the moment. you woudl then need either a very expensive taxi to St. Mawes or to hire a car - the drive, which is by no means a simple one from there, would probably take you a good hour and a half.

however, you will probably be flying into LHR, so the easiest option would be to get the train from Heathrow to Paddington, and pick up the Penzance train there, alighting at Truro. I've tried to look at prices for May, but it's too early; for the end of March/early april, the cheapest options are about £110 return, which s hardly a bargain.

From TRuro, if you are intending to STAY in St. Mawes I would strongly advise hiring a car - unless you are only going to be staying a day or two, you would soon run out of things to do and you run the risk of missing the last ferry from FAlmouth, which is pretty early. OTOH if you were only going over to St. Mawes on the day of the wedding, you might get the train to Falmouth and then just get the ferry there and back on the day.

if you do decide to hire a car at Truro, the nicest route to the Roseland [which is where St. Mawes is] is to drive down towards Falmouth, but turn left at Playing place and take the King Harry ferry across Carrick Roads [which is the name of the estuary there] and then follow the signs to St. Mawes. [don't worry, it's well signposted!]

the other way is to head east out of Truro and follow the signs. it's a nice enough drive once you get out of Truro, but the ferry ride across the estuary is special. Here's the link to the ferry company [lots of other good info too]

please feel free to come back and ask whatever else you like!

best wishes from cornwall
