Paris in August
 

We have to be in Paris the last week in August. The worst month of the year to visit I believe. What can we expect? What is closed? What's the best way to cope?

There is a recent string on this subject if you do a text search. Bottom line-evidently each year fewer places close for the whole month. Museums all open. What's closed are the TOP restaurants. Best way to cope-pick a hotel with A/C then email them for a list of restaurants they know are open. Post the list here for recos. Have a great time & enjoy.

It is a great time to be in Paris (August, that is) if you enjoy strolling around without the usual crowds of people and vehicles. Last August, the city had prepared "beaches" along the Seine. Great to view the natives out with the family.

The department stores were open as were many other shops and restaurants. All in all, a most enjoyable and leisurely opportunity.

We, too, will be in Paris the last week of August. I'm anxious to hear from others who have been there at the same time. What makes it the worst month to visit?

Well, I had the opposite experience of the other posters. It was HOT, crowded with tourists,especially student tour groups, most of the big restaurants were open, but few of the family-run ones were. Be sure to book a hotel with AC. Good advice from mclaurie..

We were in Paris last August... 24th to 31st. It was wonderful. We didn't find it too warm during the days... 75 to 80 degrees, and the nights were delightfully balmy. It rained one day and that day, we saw the Louvre. It didn't seem overly crowded, although there were lots of tourists. Most of the French people were very friendly. We would return to Paris in August, in a heartbeat.

It is a problem if you want to go the the top restaurants - they are closed, as are many of the small boutique shops that look so interesting from the outside. Having said that you will also experience to some extent the Parisians coming back home after their summer holdidays, tanned and relaxed and ready for their city again. All of the usual big places are open - so in that regard it is not really a problem.

I am pretty limited to traveling in the Summer and have been to Paris several times in July and August. Like everyone else has reommended, get a room w/AC to be on the safe side. I've been very lucky with the weather. However, those times I've been in Paris when it is hot it has also been very humid which makes its tough. I find the crowds pretty much the same throughout the Summer with August possibly being less crowded than July.

We were in Paris at the end of August a couple of years ago. Apart from the heat it was perfect as there were no crowds at all and everything had re-opened already. Do take a hotel with A/C though!
