Paris: Hyperperipherique to Cut Drive Times Dramatically?
 

Commuting times will be cut for some drivers by up to 85% folks behind Paris' new Hyperperipherique roadway, an extension of the A86 which encircles Paris.

The project has been in the works for years and work picked up pace since 2000. Two crucial new tunnels will complete the loop - the final stretch of the A86 in western Paris - allowing driviers to reach the busy A13 autoroute.

The two tunnels - Tunnel Est (2.5 mile Malmaison-A13 link should open in spring 2008 and Tunnel Ouest (3.4 mi link to Versailles sometime in 2010 - but this tunnel that connects to the A12 autoroute is still awaiting final approval.

tunnels will be two levels - one in each direction - 4 euro toll will be charged to use both tunnels

i would have thunk Paris folks would instead put the money into mass transport rather than facilitate wealthier, i think, commuters

The A86 (better known as le M25) is about as uninner as you can get. And by eliminating the need for practically going to the Champs Elysee if you're trying to get from Limoges to Calais, it'll do a lot more for the planet than yet another high speed train line taking people somewhere no-one wants to go.

Short of a direct high speed line from the Cotswolds to Heathrow, I can think of no more important piece of European infrastructure than finally finishing the A86 - after how many decasdes?

At least in Britain we delay infrastructure because we've got a consultative planning system and we hate wasting public money (except on invading Iraq) The French have neither of those excuses for the time it's taken to finish this essential road.

Yet the article in News from France, published by French Embassy USA says will

"cut some commuters' travel times by as much as 85%"

I would suggest that much of the traffic at rush hours is indeed folks commuting, not going from Calais to Limoges.

Perhaps a congestion fee in Paris though would help cut commuting down in one of europe's most heavily polluted cities, mainly due to vehicular exhaust

The idea that one would want to go from Limoges to Calais or vice-versa is humorous given Limoges' reputation as being a nowhere provincial capital. Remember the term <i>limoger</i>?
