Except for the hipster cafes and restaurants - whose hard chairs and benches you can see coming a mile away - every cafe I've sat in during the last 10 years has been furnished with woven plastic chairs. Some have kept the woven rush chairs, but both are very comfortable.

I've stayed in a hotel in the Latin Qtr that is often below that moderate range, even though a nice 4* hotel. It is only a block to the RER Luxembourg stop so great for the airport if you want to do that, and it does have a nice large lobby. I really liked it -- the Trianon Rive Gauche. I ended up there by accident when another 3* hotel in the area "walked me" because they didn't have a room for me which I had reserved well in advance. It was only one night and not far away, and they honored my cheaper rate, so I didn't complain much and I really liked it.

I'm sure it's not as grand as some of the luxury hotels, but a lot bigger than most small Parisian hotels.

Also voting for Le Grand Intercontinental for the people watching.
