Paris, hotels, only double beds?

Are most beds in Paris only doubles? Like the small boutique hotels? Do you all sleep in double beds when you go? Only one? Is a bigger bed hard to get? The couple we are traveling with have asked us to book the hotel and it seems that most only have one double bed in the small room...is that the case? Don't really want to have to stay in a Hilton for a queen bed. Kind of takes the charm out of it. Thoughts, experiences?

Certainly not! You can get twin beds, queen-sized beds, two twins pushed together to make a king, real kings...take your pick.

Your price range will really affect this. Of course there are twins, and some larger-than-double beds, but I think they are not that common as the regular double. But if you are going to newly renovated "boutique" hotels (which by my definition means more expensive and trying to cater to a bigger budget by style, renovations, amenities), I would think you can find a queen.

Some people use the term boutique just to mean an independent hotel, not chain, though, I've seen that on here.

Most less expensive hotels in europe offer either one double bed or two twin beds. To get a larger bed you typcically have to go somewhere fairly upscale (some newer less expensive hotels may offer this option as an updgrade but you will need to search). The double double arrangement is almost unknown in europe - even in American named chain hotels.

The Hotel Muguet advertises a "queen room" which I assumes means a queen bed for 125 euro. There have been many positive comments on this site about the hotel.

I'm no expert and it was only 1 trip, 2 hotels but yes we squeezed into a regular double bed. You'd need to ask the hotel or read on their websites.

Huitres Feb 3rd, 2006 11:39 AM

It's not difficult nor uncommon to ask for "un grand lit" or "un lit matrimonial" which means a larger/double bed. Generally a single room has a twin bed, with many smaller, boutique hotels putting 2 twins in a double room. Just make sure you request the larger bed when booking, so there will be no confusion or miscommunication when you arrive.

I stay at the Hotel Kensington, 79 Avenue de la Bourdonnais (right across from the Eiffel Tower and the Champs de Mars), and ask for a double room with "un grand lit" each time and always get one! I only pay 70 euros for my double room/large bed too - can't beat that for a great hotel in the 7th Arr!

Huitres, a "grand lit" in French typically will only get you a regular-size double bed (140 cm). It won't get you a queen or king size. It's just a term they use often for a double bed. I think Heavens wants a bed larger than 140 cm.

I would suggest you ask very specifically about sizes when you ask for reservations, so there is no terminology confusion, Heavens. I have had some French hotels refer to a regular double-size bed as a "queen", although not that often -- but it has happened. Ask if they have a mattress of 160 cm wide (queen) or larger, or two twins pushed together.

I agree with Christina.
We talked about european beds recently, you can see it is not that easy!

We stayed in a queen-bedded room at the Muguet last year, and were very happy with the room ( and the view of Unvalide (sp?)

If you have stayed in a double bed, you and your husband, for say, seven nights, can you get good rest for the next day? I just don't think I could in a double bed. And probably not a great bed. I know I can't expect US standards in Paris hotels, but I will try and look for what will make us comfortable while we are there.

We are hoping to stay in the 6th or close by, bc so many friends who have traveled over there have loved the neighborhood. This is our first trip. AND, I am not the best sleeper in the world, anyway...Thanks so much for your comments on this matter.

A queen would be fine. Don't mind a queen size at all, but don't think we can handle the double.

WillTravel Feb 3rd, 2006 03:14 PM

Have you checked the Holiday Inn St. Germain to see its bedding options? It has pretty good reviews.

Huitres Feb 3rd, 2006 11:06 PM

For some reason, each time I have requested a "grand lit", I have gotten a bed that is larger than a double bed or 2 twins pushed together. But indeed, it is worth asking further re: mattress size if one absolutely can't deal with a double bed. Generally, I would think one is more apt to find "American" size beds in American hotel chains, vs the smaller European hotels anyway.

A very sweet hotel right near the Luxembourg Garden has all queen beds in their double rooms.

It is the Hotel Elysa-Luxembourg.

You will not find a friendlier staff either.

Is this comment from memory? It seems unlikely that they changed all their beds!

From their website...

======================================

Rates for one person : Low Season 119 euros, High season 135 euros
Rates for two persons : Low season 135 euros, High season 150 euros

======================================

Superior double

The search for hotels that offer 160 cm beds (American "queen"), at a rate under $250 with breakfast, in an arrondissement of 1 through 8 remains a challenging search!

Best wishes,

Rex

WillTravel Jun 9th, 2007 12:04 PM

Rex, when are you looking for this?

I noticed that at least some Paris hotels on the Best Western site fit your criteria (under $250 USD including breakfast with a queen bed in arrondisements 1-8) - at least for some dates.

September 20-23

WillTravel Jun 9th, 2007 12:32 PM

Those seem to be expensive dates generally, but I did see some Best Westerns that would fit your criteria, including even king bed options. How good they are otherwise is another question, because I didn't look into that.

Based on the number of hotels that do not have availability, I would book something, anything, quick.

wliwl Jun 9th, 2007 12:47 PM

I actually had emailed them prior to that post, because I recalled that their beds were queen sized. Here is what I wrote:
"Hello,
Can you tell me how large your beds are? Are they "queen" size or "double?"
Thank you very much!"

And here is what they replied:
"Dear Madam
All our double rooms have a queen size bed.
Best regards
Chantal"

So, if this was a critical point, and of course this is a very old post (a year and a half), perhaps a phone call would be in order.
