Paris Hotels - Cheap and cheerful!!
 

We hope to travel up to Paris as part of our French summer holidays. We are looking to spend the night there but trying to do it as cheaply as possible. The we involves amy wife and I, our two kids and my mother-in-law. Ideally we would like somewhere pretty central although we do realise the closer to the centre of Paris, the more less likely to find somewhere cheap. Anyone got any tips or recommendations??

YOu have to be more specific. Surely you have some amount of money in mind -- say what it is. Some people really do think a 200 euro hotel in Paris for a double room is cheap. Other people are thinking of a 50 euro room is cheap. What camp are you in?

If you want the cheapest hotels, you can bet they won't be cheerful, even if acceptable. I think the nicest "cheap" hotel I have stayed at in Paris is the Hotel Langlois in the 9th arrondisement. It is cheerful, I suppose (I wouldn't have thought of that term, but it's very pleasant). But it is probably around 100-125 euro for a double, so is that in your budget? there are plenty of hotels cheaper than that, but I've never stayed in one that would be less than 100 euro in 2008 rate terms, so can't recommeond one.

YOu should be more specific as to your dates, also, as you can get some good discounts on summer rates if your stay will be end of July or August.

We will be trying the 'Hotel Jeanne d'Arc' as recommended by Fodors this month. I will report back by the end of Feb.

I was quite pleased at the Hotel de France-Invalides. It's in a very nice neighborhood in the 7th arr., close to the metro. Rooms are quite small and basic but very clean. I even had a nice view of the dome of Les Invalides! Service was friendly and helpful. There is a breakfast room, a small bar and free internet in the lobby.

Iregeo, when did you stay at Hotel de France? Their rates have rather shot up since a year ago.

Travelnut, I stayed there in March '06, I think! I was there alone and paid 70 or 80E for a single.

Ibis hotels have an offer for 49 euros/night even in some dates in summer, take a look at them, some are in quite good locations (even if they are not as central).

One we like that is very well located is Hotel Andrea Rivoli. We were there after Christmas a couple of years ago and it was @ 82 euros for a double. It is not fancy and the rooms were small but it was clean and had been remodeled within the past few years (@ a 2*) but within 2 blocks of the Pompideux, 4 blocks from Notre Dame and about 6 blocks from the Louvre.

Iregeo, I just noticed that HdeFrance used to have twin rooms for around 98€ (I kept a page in my binder on it), and then I checked again a couple months ago, and the twins are now 140€! I just consider that quite a hike.

Hotel Monge might be around that, some of the others I listed are less.

Can also recommend the St Jacques in the 5th, the Minerve also in the 5th, and Champs des Mars in the 7th.

Have you considered renting an apartment? Since there are five of you especially. I've seen quite a few for 700 euros for a week.

If you get yourself arrested for Drunk & Disorderly conduct, you can spend the night for free.

We stayed at Hotel Bellevue et du Chariot D'or, 39 rue de Turbago in the 4th. The hotel is nice and the room we had was great. Spotless clean. 200 feet off blvd sebastopol. 2 metros within a 5 minutes walk. The #24 bus (sebastopol) stops at rue de turbago. restaurants, monoprix, internet cafes and stuff 2 minutes walk from hotel. Norte dame and the sein was maybe a 15 - 20 minutes walk. We paid 68 Euro last sept. I have already made reservations for this sept for 70 Euros per night. Our room had a small balcony that over looked rue de turbago. For the price this hotel was great.

The Hotel Tiquetonne in the 2nd has doubles for 50E and singles for 30E. It is the cheapest central hotel in the Fodor's listings.
